COLUMBUS Ohios unemployment rate jumped to 11.1 percent in June, up from 10.8 percent in May and the first time in nearly 26 years that the rate has topped 11 percent.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the rate on Friday, July 17.
Ohios labor market continued to weaken in June, Douglas Lumpkin, ODJFS director, said in a press release. Significant job losses in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 11 .1 percent.
The states nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 33,000 over the month, from 5,133,200 in May to 5,100,200 in June.
The number of unemployed workers, however, increased to 662,000, up from 647,000 in May.
During the past 12 months, the number of Ohioans out of work has climbed by 279,000 from 383,000.
In June 2008 the jobless rate was 6.4 percent. The unemployment rate hadnt been above 11 percent since an 11.2 percent rate in August 1983. The June jobless rate marked the third straight month the rate has been in double digits, starting with a 10.2 percent rate in April.
The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent, up from Mays 9.4 percent rate.
In the Dayton area, Veronica Adkins, Kettering branch manager for Spherion, a recruiting and staffing company, said her office is seeing a lot of people who worked for Delphi and General Motors.
"The quality of people we're seeing is a lot different," she said. "You see a lot more qualified people. Usually at this time of the year her company sees lots of requests for seasonal employment but that's changed," said Adkins.
"We're not seeing seasonal orders," she said. Companies are doing more with less in areas of seasonal employment such as landscaping and warehouse work, she said.

I agree. Obama and Strickland are to blame. Businesses look at higher taxes, higher inflation, minimum wage laws, and a lethargic work force damaged by too much of a welfare safety net, and they opt to go elsewhere.
This isn’t just political talk on my part. I’m an independent conservative, and I have no particular love for the rino party liberals any more than for the demo party liberals.
These people really are bankrupting America.
I take issue this the portion of the title which reads; “Obama gamble loses in bell-weather Ohio”...it’s more like Ohio lost gambling on zero....
Yeah. They need to mend their ways and stop hogging all the money for themselves.
Right! Hopefully they both win their respective races.
Yes - it’s very, very sad. And those jobs are not ever coming back, even though Joe Biden says they are.
Thanks. I’ll be real interested to see how this comes out. Does he have a lawyer yet?
People are greatly mistaken when they pay off their mortgages and think they finally own their home. Miss one tax payment and see who shows up at your door...the real owner, the government. We all are just leasing from the government.
That’s what it says.
Titles have only so many letters allowed, so sometimes brevity loses some in translation.
Holy cow. We’re moving to PA in a couple of months...although we’ll have several orders of magnitude below 100 acres.
Drove past the GM Moraine (Dayton) complex a while back.
Countless acres of empty asphalt - had that ‘Omega Man’ feel to it.
"Come see what I see everywhere I go: workers rehired, factories reopened, cops on the street, teachers in the classroom, progress toward getting our economy back on the move." -
Joe Biden July 16, 2009
Remember when George Bush was president and you still had a job and a house?
From your lips to God’s ears! Even if we do sweep in it is going to take a very lng time just to undo the damage done over the past decade. At this point I’m just hoping the downward spiral can be stopped and that things don’t get worse.
I guess they didn’t realize that the Change they were Hoping for was fascism.
Bush’s fault doesn’t hold water anymore...
If the election were held today - Kasich would beat Strickland by margins similar to Strickland’s victory over Blackwell in ‘06.
“0bama gamble...”
WTF?
There’s no gambling going on!
They know what they’re doing.
Pull your heads out of you *sses and look around.
These are hard-leftists pulling off the quintessential commie snatch-’n-grab with your country and your freedom.
They have to break it down to take it over and raise up their idea of ‘common good’.
This is not hard to see.
Wake the hell up!
“Remember when George Bush was president and you still had a job and a house?”
I say that all of the time!
Ohio should raise taxes.
“Remember when George Bush was president and you still had a job and a house?”
Speaking of homes...Here’s Bush on homes.
