THE world's cheapest car, the Tata Nano, hit the streets today.
The first customer was handed the keys to the vehicle its makers hope will transform travel for millions of Indians.
The head of Tata Motors, Ratan Tata, delivered the car in person at a central Mumbai dealership. No details were immediately available about the recipient or the type of Nano being delivered. But analysts said the delivery was a positive step. If follows a land dispute which forced the company to produce the cars in eastern India, delaying its production.
"I think it's very significant," the associate editor of trade magazine Autocar Professional, Darius Lam, told AFP.
"They have been talking about delivering this car since last year and subsequently due to the problems they have had with moving the factory they have had to delay it by at least one year.

"It really shows that now they are getting their production in hand and are able to start delivering."

I feel like that if my Cannondale went against a Nano, I'd have a fighting chance /sarc>
But seriously, can you imagine a Nano hit by a Hummer -- or even a deer?
Cheers!
TATA NONO, there fixed it,, pass me by.
Now I know why Obama closed all those dealerships. Had to make space available for the Tatas and Cherrys.
I like the VW Beetle (the old one) better.
And if you hit something...it winds up in your lap...I like a long front end for absorption
If I water it daily, will it grow?

Is it a push start or a pull start?
No.Only DD cup size...sorry;-))
I’d like to get ahold of a pair of Tata’s.
I can see it now. The American nickname for the car will be Bodacious TaTas. Maybe there is a plus side to this car afterall.
“but remember we were dismissive of the Japanese”
Well said. I have spent the last 10 years working in the automotive sector. It is true in some areas the quality isn’t there yet. But, every year they get better. (The Chinese and Indian products.) The firm I am employed at realizes that we face a stiff challenge, and it is coming soon. Remember the Hyundai of the early 90’s? It was junk. The Hyundai you buy today is a different animal. The Chinese are in this for the long haul - they look down the road and then work their ass off to get to that point. We in some respects are playing checkers with China and India. Quick, erratic moves, not sure whats coming next. They are playing chess with us. Sacrifice a pawn here, place a rook there, etc. My fear is that one day, we are going to pop up grinning and say “crown me”. And they are going to look at us and smile, and say “check mate.”-—JM
I think she was a tsunami survivor.
Except for the plastics and small engine, many of these features made the old Dodge Darts and Chevy Novas available. I hate power windows. I wish I could get a true family sedan like those old stalwarts, priced accordingly. Airbags should be an option only.
looks like an Obamamobile to me
And how is that?
