The Palin Effect
The American Spectator ^ | July 16, 2009 | Christopher Orlet

Conservative intellectuals and pundits are old hands when it comes to being at odds with grassroots America. Whether it was William F. Buckley's opposition to the War in Iraq, Milton Friedman's championing of legalized marijuana or Heather Mac Donald's defense of atheism, conservative writers and thinkers have been unafraid to take unpopular stands even if it means thumbing their nose at the home crowd.

A few of them were at it again this week. Exhibit A is the recent criticism of soon-to-be former Gov. Sarah Palin. The Los Angeles Times noted that while Palin remained the darling of the Republican base, many conservative pundits harbored reservations about her qualifications for the nation's highest office, a charge echoed by Bill Kristol in the Washington Post. "[M]any of my friends in … the Republican establishment…tend not only to dislike and disdain Palin, they also want to bury her chances now as a presidential possibility. What are they so scared of?"

The perfect definition of an elitist.

So it’s alright to elect a sex offender (Clinton) and a community organizer (Obama) instead?

Milton Friedman would not descibe himself -- if he were still alive -- as a conservative.

In fact, in an interview [at minute mark 1:30 in this YouTube video] he shunned the label 'conservative'.

I dunno. I don’t think the author is 100% sympathetic to the elitists who are trashing Palin.

This quote from the piece is especially irksome:”Palin’s supporters are right about another thing: experience alone is not enough. What else is needed, writes George Will, are the three C’s: character, common sense, and constitutional sense. Charisma, which Palin clearly has in spades, is notably not one of the three C’s.”

SP is lacking common sense and character?

Golly, just uttering the 4 pedestrian syllables of Sar-ah Pal-in makes me feel:

- less sophisticated
- woefully inexperienced
- in dire need of more political “service” time.
- abjectly unready for the “national stage”
- less like an elitist, cynical political insider
- far, far away from the hugely overrated halls of the “prestigious” Ivy League.

(pseudo) Intellectuals have been running the show for a long time and the country is in a hell of a mess. We owe China money, the media is totally out of control as is popular culture. Time for someone like Sarah.

Veteran GOP ad man Mike Murphy told the LA Times that Palin's popularity rests entirely on the shaky foundation of her looks, which, at her age, are bound to go soon. "If Sarah Palin looked like Golda Meir, would we even be talking about her today?"

WTF...our own side is now saying she is too good looking to be taken seriously? Personally, I think Maggie Thatcher and Golda Meir were some of the best leaders we've had in a while and yes, because of the record...which includes kicking the crooked old bstrds and corrupt GOP out on their asses, and based on who she is and what she stands for and the courage of her convection, HEL YES I will vote for her...even if she IS good lookin...

My wife and I live in a small town in Arkansas. She is a school administrator, I am a metal worker. We buy our clothes off the rack, I drive a 10 year old pickup, my wife drives a 3 year old Hyundai. We get everything we buy at Wal-Mart. We go to church on Sundays, try to raise our children right. When we look at Sarah Palin & Family, we see someone whose life looks somewhat like ours. When we look at the Washington elite, we see folks who live vastly different than we do. These are the “smart” people who use the big words and say and do the “right” things. Look around you - the “elite” have screwed this country up. Sarah Palin may not have graduated from an Ivy League school, she may not be a lot of things. But, she is one of us, and I am willing to give one of my own kind a try. She would be hard pressed to do worse than what we have. We like her. The more she gets smeared, the more we like her. The elites and insiders better be scared - because if she runs - we are going to vote for her.-—JM

In times of crisis Americans have been very successful when they turned to outsiders who were ridiculed by the experts in the political establishment. Abraham Lincoln had almost no government experience and was called an ignorant bumpkin, a savage and a baboon and was declared unqualified for the presidency by almost all the Washington elite. Ronald Reagan was regularly called an idiot, a dunce and a third rate actor pretending to be president but totally out of his depth.
On the other hand the Washington establishment raved about how brilliant Jimmy Carter was and how his ideas like zero based budgeting would make government better. The best and the brightest of the JFK-LBJ years were all said to be brilliant and their Viet Nam strategy was described as the work of genius. Walter Mondale was declared highly qualified over and over. James Buchanan was described at the time as far more qualified than Lincoln. Character is far more important than how you answer Katie Couric’s silly question. Sarah Palin has personal integrity and moral courage. I’ll take that any day over the geniuses in Washington who are bankrupting our great country.
