Secretary of State (of Illinois) Paul Powell left several million in shoeboxes. Before he died, the State of Illinois had a "good government" essay contest named after him.

But my stepdad (a trucker) and many others knew the truth. We were told always to write "Secretary of State" and never "Paul Powell" on any checks for drivers licenses, etc. He actually took those checks home and cashed them for himself. At $5-$15 per check - typical in the 1960s, that would be about a million checks that got diverted. Obviously, the bank cashing the checks also had to know.

Sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine. He made a generalization. Sure, there are black people who don't toe the Sharpton/Jesse/NAACP/BET line. But with Obama getting something like 90% or more of the black vote, one has to say that it is generally true that most black people did/do support Obama, Sotomayor and his policies.

Sorry, but it just gripes me when I see someone take a generalization as meaning EVERY SINGLE PERSON. Obviously the author did not intend to mean EVERY SINGLE BLACK PERSON. If he did, then his article was pointless.

The story behind the big trucking money that Powell raked in was that my father won a Tire Company in a poker game and talked Powell, Choate and the man he won the business from into opening up tire sales to trucking companies. After Powell's death, the 4th partner in the business, the bad poker player ended up in prison over the tire business.
I was just a kid but had my eyes opened to Illinois politics and all politics as far as I'm concerned. There is no honorable men in the halls of power, money and greed.
Paul Powell's wife, Daisy, told my mother “if the old S.O.B. dies you need to get to his closet in his room at the St. Nicholas hotel in Springfield.” She knew where the money was but she died before him. The woman Marge Hensley that was with him when he died was his long time secretary and mistress, who Daisy knew of and fought against. All these wives of politicians know whats going on. So sad.
