Laz,
Never attribute to conspiracy or malintent that which can be explained by simple human incompetence and stupidity.

Lordy. We had a similar thing happen in Birmingham, AL a few years ago. It's happened in the Dallas area, as well.

And Calif.

So it's not like it hasn't been done before.

Each boom must have been the gas tank on a vehicle.
Figure that every compartment on the tanker will cause a separate explosion. So depending on how many compartments there are, is how many booms you're going to hear.
I am listening to a live streaming on the accident and one guy the newsies were interviewing was complaining about his throat hurting him. I can see the first lawsuit developing right there.

I wonder why the government run media organizations are not covering this?? Obama is going to run with this and say this is why the United States needs to stop using petroleum products and Al Gore will complain this is further causing global warming.

He always faces traffic issues, he is a trucker...But I just hope this explosion doesn’t damage any homes in the area...The Hazel Park racetrack is right in that area, but I am not sure if they still run the pony’s there..

There’s a link at the top of the thread to some news reports. They were talking to a girl who was in front of the tanker and watched the wreck in her rear view mirror. Said she just passed the truck and the truck veered into the center divide right behind her.

Theres a link at the top of the thread to some news reports. They were talking to a girl who was in front of the tanker and watched the wreck in her rear view mirror. Said she just passed the truck and the truck veered into the center divide right behind her. No telling what happened. Mechanical wise a blow out on the steering axle would do it. When that happens the driver has little control except to get the rig stopped as soon as possible without hitting the tractor brakes. Pull the trailer brake lever down, accelerate slightly to try and prevent jack knifing, and pray.

I cant understand how a tanker would hit an overpass. Most gasoline tankers are under 12 feet tall and all overpasses, unless marked otherwise, are supposed to be 13 ft 6 inches. You kidding? How about losing control going under, impacting the side of the tunnel entrance causing a massive leak and explosion?
Happens all the time.

There was a similar incident in Oakland with a tanker that destroyed a flyover link from I80 to 580/24.
Fuel tankers are huge bombs!

"
The article says witnesses claim the tanker was too tall for the clearance." Really hard to believe! We've had a 14' clearance standard since 1955.
