They don’t even know how many cars involved...It is still burning. Haven’t heard any more reports about the fire truck.

That doesn’t fit with the recent FReeper policy of time-after-time making silly implications and looking foolish.

Channel 4 Detroit just reported the possibility “a man was walking in the middle of the freeway with a backpack.”

Early reports that the tanker hit the TOP of the bridge/overpass may not be correct.
It appears the tanker and a tractor-trailer rig collided.
The tanker may have hit the bridge supports or side.

I dont think the accident was caused by a bridge clearance issue. More reports coming in do make better sense.
I do think it was caused by a nut (or two) behind the wheel.
No telling what happened. I drove a freighter for a while. In some cases the person who cause or nearly cause a chain reaction wreck never even realized what happened and drive on.

Thanks very much for posting that pic, Yo-Yo. That is one of my favorite scenes of all time. When you 1st round that curve on I-75 (and are driving in the left lane) the vision of the RenCen (GM building) dominates your field of vision...
...as you drive on the church overtakes the image of the building as it perfectly superimposes itself on the scene.
A visual MUST SEE for anyone driving in Detroit on southbound I-75. (Stay in the left lane for MAXIMUM effect.)

It doesn't matter how many axles are on a trailer. They have height restrictions. If an oversized load needs to be moved, the city, county and state has to approve the route and there is no way all three would have allowed an over height tanker to move. I don't want to downplay this accident but accidents do happen. There are thousands of reasons why a tanker would or could explode. To all the readers here in FRer land, a major statistic about truck accidents is: over 80% of all accidents involving big rigs are caused by cars. I am a truck driver now and a retired sheriff's deputy. I'm not a highway patrol officer which mostly happen all investigations involving commercial vehicle accidents but have had enough training and hands on to know what probably happened.

I must say, I think the death toll will be quite high in this one.
Neighbors reported loud firecracker sounds that went on for at least five minutes.
Each ‘boom’ must have been the gas tank on a vehicle.
That’s a lot of vehicles.
I pray the firefighters got away in time.

Channel 7(WXYZ) had a call from a woman who was immediately in front of the tanker although one lane over. She said the tanker veered from the right lane over to the left lane and ended up hitting the median and was crosswise across the freeway. She saw this unfold in her rear view mirror and did not see what caused the sudden lane change. Also just heard the tanker driver said he was T-boned by someone. He called his wife from the ambulance. He has knee and leg injuries.
