I'll tell you a true story about the area where Thompson disappeared...maybe you can make the connections.

Years ago, a palm seed collector from here visited Chiang Mai, Thailand, more precisely the Golden Triangle area in Northern Thailand and was murdered. It's an area in Thailand that's still controlled by opium growers and traffickers who are descendants of the Kuo Min Tang army that was abandoned by Chiang Kai Shek after he fled to Taiwan from mainland China.

They are mercenary and viciously protective of any foreign intrusions into the area, suspecting anyone visiting the area of being DEA or some other agency and tend to shoot on sight.

If the palm seed collector had just stayed in Chiang Mai and sent out locals to collect, he might have lived.

David Shuster Ignores Own 'Pimped Out' Remark, Tells FreeRepublic.com to Stop Vile Language

MSNBC's David Shuster, who was suspended in 2008 for proclaiming that Chelsea Clinton was being "pimped out" by her then-candidate mother, on Monday challenged a representative of Free Republic as to what he would do to try and "discourage people" from using "hateful, vile language" on the website.

Guest Kristinn Taylor, a spokesman for the Washington D.C. chapter of Free Republic, appeared on the show to battle with the MSNBC Live host over offensive comments that were posted on the site about 11-year old Malia Obama. Taylor combatively contradicted an assertion by Shuster that some racist remarks featured under a picture of the Obama daughter were reposted on the web page after initially being removed: "Well, David, unfortunately, it seems you've gotten your story from the Daily Kos, which is not a reliable source of information."
