NEW YORK, July 14 (Reuters) - U.S. government officials are weighing a plan that would let borrowers who have fallen behind on their mortgage payments avoid eviction by renting their homes instead, sources familiar with the administration's thinking said on Tuesday.
Under one idea being discussed, delinquent homeowners would surrender ownership of their homes but would continue to live in the property for several years, the sources told Reuters.
Officials are also considering whether the government should make mortgage payments on behalf of borrowers who cannot keep up with their home loans, tapping an unused portion of a $50 billion housing aid kitty.
As part of this plan, jobless borrowers might receive a housing stipend along with regular unemployment benefits, the sources said. (Reporting by Patrick Rucker; Editing by Diane Craft)

The only way it will end is through your state legislature.
Contact them, encourage state sovereignty legislation, and get ready to fight.
Don't forget the light bulbs, toilet, and energy efficient appliances...um...and about the fuel efficiency rating of that car in the driveway....The list goes on and on.
I can't even fathom what it would be like if they get ZeroCare passed...on to what's in the refrigerator and medicine cabinets!...
While I have some sympathy for those who are underwater in their mortgages, I disagree that “you are already renting”. You are not subject to terms of a lease, a landlord who comes and goes, a restriction as to not putting pictures up on the walls or painting a room blue, you can plant a tree in the yard, keep it as clean or dirty as you like.
Oh my!! I love it!
Oh, Lordy! We is all gonna be shahcroppahs on Massa Obama’s new plantation!
LOL!
What is the incentive to invest in this country now?
I can see NONE.
Didn’t they already MULL the idea of loan forgiveness?
What’s next Obama Toilet Paper?
Bottom line—any private owner who considers financing the sale of his house is a LUNATIC. Non-paying squatters could remain there forever.
Wow. That's scary, isn't it?
For a man who can't remember where he met his wife, and who got lots of facts wrong in his autobiography (like the year of Nixon's impeachment), and who thinks he sat on the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, he sure is clueless.
Scarier and scarier.
0bama, the jack-of-all-trades: healthcare provider, car company CEO, landlord/slumlord, what’s next?
exactly. Why should they have the privileges of ownership?
Honestly, if Bambi becomes Dictator for Life as he would like, Big Brother will someday tell me I have too much house for one person, and get me a crappy 1 room Soviet-type apt. while letting a free-loading “family” of 6-8 kids all by different sperm donors trash my house beyond recognition. Don’t think it can’t happen.
sounds good but one problem- I live in NY which is quickly reverting back to pre-Rudy days as one of the nation’s biggest entitlement parasites...
Great idea. Old and busted: HUD and urban renewal programs. New and fresh: If you’re delinquent on house payments, you get sent to the projects so that new lowlife tenants have a place to get high/drunk, kick holes in the walls, break the fixtures, and have a bunch of feral kids that wander the neighborhood destroying property at random.
The liberals have thought of a new way to destroy neighborhoods. Brilliant!
Rental Czar?
There will necessarily have to be a reshuffling of the population post “divorce”.
