Louis Gill doesn't like to turn anyone away. The director of the Bakersfield Homeless Center in California has taken to laying out cots and mattresses between the shelter's 174 registered beds to cope with the rush of homeless families brought to his doors by the financial crisis.
"Last year we saw a 34 percent increase in homeless families and a 24 percent increase in homeless children," he said. "Why do we go beyond capacity? Because in a just society a child should not have to sleep outside or in a car."
Gill is a frontline witness to the change in the makeup of the country's homeless. The stereotype of a homeless person as a single man no longer applies. A resident of the Bakersfield Center is far more likely to be a young mother with a "good, solid job and a mortgage that she just couldn't pay.
"They're like folks you know and that you've worked with," Gill said. "Maybe the work's not there right now. Maybe they got behind on their payments. But the idea of a typical homeless person has changed. We're seeing individuals come in that have never had to access the safety net before."

What a homeless article without a GOP president?
We had oodles of them under Reagan, a couple of "tent city" stories under Bush last Fall but none under Obambi even though unemployment's at 9.5%.
Here's the token story. Probably won't see anymore until a Repub becomes President and unemployment is back down to 5% or so.
I was just going to say that.
This must be another one of those record breaking Obama firsts.
During better economic times (Bush) it was hard to be too sympathetic when people could find jobs.
In Obama’s emerging Depression - a lot of people are going to become victims. People we may know who you never expected in your wildest dreams.

There is a reason for this. A change from 6 to 8 is "a 33% rise."
Frantzie Frantzie Frantzie ,
This is Bush’s fault. Just ask Obammy or his buttboys, they’ll tell ya.
Come re-election time I bet these buttboys are still claiming it’s all Bush’s fault.
They have repeated this same cliche in every interview for the last forty years.
“Women and minorities hardest hit...”
“What a homeless article without a GOP president?”
IIRC, the Democrats were going to solve this problem back in 1992.
**Recession Creates Legions of Newly Homeless**
Obama Creates Legions of Newly Homelss
There, fixed the title!
They should write thank you letters to Mr. Hopey Changy and Congress creeps Frank and Dodd with special attention to the other two thieves, Pelosi and Reid.
Where’s that “hell frozen over” sign? I have never seen the homeless talked about during a Democrat administration, even if they were blaming it on a Republican.
Mr. Treasurer although escapes paying taxes is still in a home.
A just society does not tax income a family needs to eat and a just society does not tax and punish those who create jobs and wealth
“It’s not my fault! I couldn’t help it!”
The statists in Atlas Shrugged.... said those things too
There may now be a new slant on the story:
(1 Its all Bushs fault.
(2 Our circumstances have now become so dire that the Kenyan Pretender must have new, even more sweeping, powers to correct the horrible errors Bush has inflicted on us.
Hence the stories on the homeless may become one of the devices to convince us that we must turn our fortunes and our lives over to the keeping of the 0bamatrons.
For details see Atlas Shrugged.
Yep, here in Illinois when a state income tax increase was being cosidered, many in the press were reffering to a 1.5% increase. It would have gone from 3% to 4.5%. That's a 50% increase, not a 1.5% increase.
