At a ramshackle homeless shelter in Reynosa, Mexico, on the south bank of the Rio Grande, a group of men stand in the suffocating heat all day. From behind a low cement wall, they stare across at the country where, until recently, they lived, worked and raised families.
... Manuel Cantero is among the men at the shelter. He's a 54-year-old laborer originally from Nuevo Laredo. For the past 29 years, he lived quietly in Miami, worked odd jobs, married and had three kids.
"But work began to get scarcer; my wife got into drugs. They deported me. I lost my children. And here I am," he says.
Cantero was deported to Mexico last week. He's still bewildered at his reversal of fortune. He says he was simply walking down the street when they picked him up.
...In recent years, [ICE]has been partnering with local police to find and remove illegal immigrants who commit crimes, even misdemeanors. Last year, 114,000 "criminal aliens" were deported. The largest number 85,000 were Mexican nationals, like Vidal Garcia.
"I've been here several months," Garcia says. "But when they deported me, the situation was critical. Work was dropping a lot. In the old days, with a fake Social Security number you could get work. But for about a year, every company now checks your Social Security card and your green card."
Garcia, 29, is a landscaper from Oaxaca, recently of Gainesville, Ga. ... Garcia, with a crew cut and sad eyes, says he was deported for drinking and brawling.
"They're deporting people for whatever reason," he says. "I came from Georgia, and there's a law that they can grab you for not having a license, for drinking a beer, for whatever reason they'll deport you."

Good. They all need to go home.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they deport people who are here ILLEGALLY!!! About damn time too.
“there’s a law that they can grab you for not having a license, for drinking a beer, for whatever reason they’ll deport you.”
There’s also a law about being in the country ILLEGALLY there Vidal!!!
Oh boo freakin’ hoo!
the Baraqqis don’t need them until Nov 2012..........
Enforcement at the employment level is a great way of stopping illegal immigration.
Thank God Garcia was deported before he killed an innocent American family while driving drunk some Saturday night. That happens too frequently for me to feel sorry for him.
This sounds like more liberal propaganda. Obama is trying to create the impression that enforcement is working, which is supposed to be the precondition for comprehensive immigration reform, i.e., amnesty.
But when they deported me, the situation was critical

Yeppers they got rid of you before you could kill Americas by driving drunk on our roads...
I’d say that was critical...
This is NPR propaganda. The poor illegals etc etc. It is all BS because not enough are going home. Locally we have lots of brazilians and SEIU (ACORN) tries to organaize them. They go to the local hospital for free healthcare on my property taxes. They seem to have money to brun to go to brazilian clubs and restaurants until late at night.
Meanwhile - working class Americans are taxed to death while illegals get endless benefits including health care drugs, housing vouchers, legal aid, food stamps, welfare, education at $10,000 a year per kid and the list goes on and on.
Same thought here
:)
I say this as a husband of a LEGAL Mexican National that waited in line, paid $6000 in legal bills and who is STILL proving every year that this is a REAL marriage.
At out last hearing my wife and I started bickering about exact dates of when we met, first date, etc.
The examiner watched for a while and the said “Yeah, you two are definitely married!”

Haven’t heard much about America’s homeless since Obummer took over. Guess they’ve all immigrated to Mexico.
suprised that i’m actually reading this. I guess it is 2 fold-as mentioned at the employment level as well as the state level. good news indeed.
It definitely is precisely that, and if you listen to the audio you will barf. This is spoon-feeding for liberals. The illegals have "sad eyes" and they are "friendly" and they mourn the death of the one who drowned swimming the Rio Grande, blablabla......
I don't trust for one minute that enforcement is up that much. Something smells like pedo.

Thank you for doing it the right way...
Tell your wife, Welcome to America
:)
Happens daily around the U.S. driving drunk or some sex crime involving a child. It is not that people from these countries are bad people but a lot of illegals have criminal records back home.
In other words we get a lot of their scum. Scams, frauds, mortgage fraud, medicare fraud and others are also big business. If you go to a foreign country, you cannot speak the language, your skills are limited etc etc - you are going to get involved in crime.
This libtard NPR tearjerker he starts talking about his wife getting involved in drugs then trails off. Drugs consumption or dealing or what? three kids? Who paid for them? Dumb poor Gringo whitey American taxpayers I bet.
three illegal aliens kids? Well the local public school between “education”, school bus, free lunch pluss breakfast and a snak (aka dinner) costs $10,000 each x 3 = $30,000 a year right there. Wonder why Calif is broke?
Boo freakin’ hoo.
