Without a Doubt: Why Barack Obama represents American Catholics better than the pope does
MSNBC ^ | Sep 7, 2009 | Kathleen Kennedy Townsend

Tomorrow Pope Benedict XVI and President Barack Obama meet for the first time, an affair much anticipated and in some circles frowned upon by American Catholics in the wake of Obama's controversial Notre Dame commencement speech in May. Conservatives in the church denounced Obama's appearance as a nod by the premier Catholic university to a conciliatory politics that heralds the start of a slippery moral slope.

In truth, though, Obama's pragmatic approach to divisive policy (his notion that we should acknowledge the good faith underlying opposing viewpoints) and his social-justice agenda reflect the views of American Catholic laity much more closely than those vocal bishops and pro-life activists. When Obama meets the pope tomorrow, they'll politely disagree about reproductive freedoms and homosexuality, but Catholics back home won't care, because they know Obama's on their side. In fact, Obama's agenda is closer to their views than even the pope's.

It's fitting that Obama's visit comes just days after the publication of "Charity in Truth," a Vatican encyclical that declares unions, regulation of capitalism's excesses, and environmentalism to be ethical imperatives. The document gives moral credence to Obama's message and to progressive politics writ large.

Even more intriguing is the pope's support for political activism, which he refers to in the encyclical as "the institutional path … of charity,

Kennedy-Townsend thinks 0bama is the messiah.

I don't recall a pope making that claim.

I once had an argument on Michael Medved’s Show with an LA Times writer. He kept referring to the tax money I wanted back so I could donate it to my own choice of charities as HIS money. That's how they think. Extra tax money, that which if never taken would have been donated to the Make-A-Wish Fund or St Jude's, is THEIR money,to be used as THEY see fit. Sickening.

Sorry, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.

The Pope is your basic holy guy.

Obama is very, very evil.

As are you.

Sick, this is offensive to me. There is only one Messiah, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Please don’t do this anymore!

American Catholics don’t want a liar representing us. Read this latest update from Father Z’s website.

I get so tired of these poor lost souls. They never seem to understand the truth. First of all, they seem to believe that they speak for huge numbers of people: “the Catholic laity” for instance. Second, they obviously have no knowledge about truth or Catholic teaching or they have discounted what they know. I know I should pray for their immortal souls — but they truly make my attempts at being Christ-like more difficult than I want them to be.

Pray for me.

I believe in Jesus and I also believe this picture hilariously skewers Obama’s arrogance.

Obama's pragmatic approach to divisive policy (his notion that we should acknowledge the good faith underlying opposing viewpoints)

This line of bull cracks me up every time I read it. Obama basically said pro-choicers should talk nice while they go about the business of murder, and lefties try to portray that as a pragmatic approach to POLICY.

Obama is emphasizing the value of SPIN...and is credited with being a great leader. Wow.
