Tea Party Group Banned from Nation's Oldest Parade

Passing out U.S. Constitutions on July 4th gets group tossed from annual celebration. The Rhode Island Tea Party group says that it has banned from future Bristol 4th of July Parades. Last Saturday's parade, which is the oldest in the country at 224 years, had included a float representing the taxpayer group, which has recently been organizing "Tea Party" type political rallys.

Tea Party spokesperson Marina Peterson says she was contacted by a parade committe member on Wednesday and was told "It is because some members of the RI Tea Party passed out U.S. Constitutions to the crowd. Apparently passing out the US Constitution on Independence Day is an egregious violation of parade rules. This is despite the fact that other floats passed out solicitations for their businesses, which is against the Parade guidelines, and these businesses have NOT been told that they are banned from participating in the future."

Calls to parade committee member Jim Tavares were not immediately returned.

They ought to attend as planned and sue any and all who attempt to deprive them of their 1st amendment rights. Are the local police beholding to the US Constitution or the mayor, et al??

Yes, it certainly is. Although the Constitution didn’t come until later, it’s still very fitting for our founding documents to be handed out on the 4th of July. That shouldn’t be seen as politically partisan either since both parties are admonished to respect it.

There’s a real disconnect for some in this nation. It’s what I refer to as a sickness in the land.

I did read the float application and it stated plainly that things were not to be handed out. If other floats did it and got away with it then either they lied to the committee and should be reprimanded, fined or kicked out of next year’s parade. If this doesn’t happen then the tea party group has grounds for a discrimination law suit.

Why ban the group from any future parades though? Wouldn’t a warning have sufficed? I saw their float at the parade and it was great...just seems very heavy handed and I suspect another agenda at work here...

Well, it's not like they passed out copies of the Declaration of Independence—with the following words highlighted:

That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government...

Is this a public event supported by government? If so they cannot ban a group for political speech where they allow other speech.

They should march anyway.

You're right! We need to stop asking for permission to do things and just start doing them..

It's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission. Petty dictators' power rests in their 'power" to say no. Don't give the chance to exercise their "power"

Hard to see how passing out Constitutions would not be a logical part of an Independence Day celebration.
