WASHINGTON -- Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon E. Panetta has told lawmakers that CIA officials misled Congress "for a number of years" since 2001, according to a letter released Wednesday from six Democratic lawmakers.
The lawmakers say the CIA also withheld information about unspecified "significant actions."
The letter didn't identify when Mr. Panetta made the statements or to what they referred.
"This is similar to other deceptions of which we are aware from other recent periods, " the letter continued.
CIA spokesman George Little said "it is not the policy or practice of the CIA to mislead Congress." Mr. Little said the CIA itself "took the initiative to notify the oversight committees" about the lapses.
The release of the letter is the latest twist in a tussle between House Democrats and the CIA. Earlier this year, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused the CIA of misleading her in briefings about the agency's use of waterboarding, an allegation refuted by the agency and challenged by Republicans.

I think Congress has misled the American people and destroyed our economy, weakened our security, are ignoring our Constitution, and want to take freedom away from the American people. Pannetta would do well to cover his own rear end at this point. The American people aren’t in exactly a kind mood.
But didn’t Panetta make a public announcement specifically stating the CIA did not mislead lawmakers? Somebody is not telling the truth.
I see where this.is going
CIA mislead Congress but not the Bush WH
Speaker of the House: I never knew about CIA interrogations.
CIA: You most certainly did! We briefed you many times.
CIA chief: No we didn’t.
CIA: We didn’t?
CIA: Listen to me carefully. No, we didn’t.
I googled “scum of the earth” and up popped Leon Panetta’s name.
Sure have it pulled if ya want ...I looked under the title on WSJ ...nothing came up
Don’t despair. You had to know that the administration, given enough time, would come to the rescue of Pelosi.
The real challenge here will be to protect the real workers in the CIA. They don’t deserve this.
Pelosi got to Panetta. Panetta was easily bought, I would wager.
I wouldnt believe a word he or Pelosi have to say.
It’s a pretty obvious con-job.
By the way the Boss of the CIA just sold out every agent there. Called them cheats and liars. That should be great for morale.
Score another win for Obama in the destruction of the United States.
