Mark Kirk announces plan to run for Senate
The Chicago Daily Herald ^ | July 8, 2009 | Joseph Ryan

U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk told several Republican leaders Wednesday he was set to run for Senate, GOP sources told the Daily Herald.

Kirk of Highland Park has been debating a run for Senate or governor for months, but apparently made the final decision as Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced she was backing away from a run for U.S. Senate or governor in the 2010 election.

Kirk spokesman Eric Elk declined to comment Wednesday on whether or not the congressman had informed GOP brass about an intention to run for Senate.

Elk issued a statement from Kirk saying, "I will announce my intentions regarding statewide office very soon."

Kirk's potential bid has been championed by state and national party leaders. They view his voting record in Congress over five two-year terms, siding with the party often but breaking away on environmental and social issues, as a perfect mix to win statewide office in the Democratic state.

He already has an endorsement from former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, who led the state in the 1990s.

There is good news and there is bad news in Illinois.

The good news- Mark Kirk will be the Republican nominee for Senate (he’ll be a strong general election candidate)

The bad news- Mark Kirk will be the Republican nominee for the Senate (he’s a RINO)

Conservatives will have to hold their thumbs and forefingers firmly to their noses to support him. His vote fo the Cap & Trade Bill was especially egregious.

Yes he did. He hurt our nation in order to gain a bit of favor with fence sitting democrats in his state. Shame on him. He is EXACTLY what we do NOT NEED.

Do everything you can to help him lose. Small gains by Rhino’s are long term disasters for us conservatives.

THe local media fawns over Kirk like they do Obama. The Chicago media touts Kirk as the voice of reason in the GOP.

I wonder how the media will treat him now that Kirk is gunning for Obama’s Senate seat.

As someone who recently moved out of Chicago, the voters in that mess of a city are total DEM zombies and decide the state elections by a large margin. Even the Blago scandel wont help the GOP much. Its a steep uphill climb. Not sure if its reachable.

Good question. It depends partly on who the ‘Rat nominee is.

They must be viewing some other Congressman's voting record. The RINO Mark Kirk we have here in Illinois hardly ever sides with the party. The only examples I can think of major contested legislation where he voted with "his" party was opposing porkulus (when EVERY Republican in the House opposed it as well), and voting for W's tax cuts waaaaaaaaay back in 2009. Other than that, the "independent" Mark Kirk has been a rubber stamp for most of Pelosi's major agenda. He's so far left that two liberal RAT Congressman from Illinois (Foster & Costello) couldn't even stomach the marxist Cap n' Trade garbage that "moderate" Mark Kirk eagerly voted for. Gee, I wonder how they got "elected" in their districts, since Kirk apologists claim he has to vote like that to "win". Funny how half the Dems we have here in Illinois aren't as far left as "moderate" Mark Kirk.

Eric Wallace for U.S. Senate.

Why? If I agreed with Kirk's positions I could just vote for the RAT nominee and get the exact same thing. Has anyone noticed a change in Rhode Island's voting record since Chafee was replace with Whitehorse?

Just think how lucky us folks here in IL are. On one hand we have Roland Burris - who swears he didn’t buy the seat from Blago but the tapes I listened to seemed to indicate otherwise. He’s useless other than as the token black Senator. So we can replace useless with worse-than-useless in RINO Mark Kirk. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if he did one of those hopey-changey things and ran as a Dem because he truly is one already. Rock, meet Hard Place.

“Has anyone noticed a change in Rhode Island’s voting record since Chafee was replace with Whitehorse?”

Chafee voted against all ‘Rat judicial filibusters.

I know it sucks that we have to resort to the likes of Kirk. I wish there were a better feasible choice. If there is one, please let me know. But I have yet to see it. I’m sure Eric Wallace is a good man, but his electoral record doesn’t inspire confidence.

Conservatives can get out there and find a conservative candidate, support him, expose the RINO and the RAT and get the conservative candidate elected even if they have to go door to door night after night! No excuses allowed. No rewards and no support for RINO’s that voted to destroy this country. Tell the RINO to his face that he’s not wanted in the Party. Conservatives better fine their spine, guts, and gonads or the country is doomed and our children and grandchildren’s futures are in the toilet.

Living in the People's Republic of Illinois, I've actually met Mr. Kirk and know many people who support him. He seems like a nice, affable person. But you have to remember: Illinois Republicans are a different breed; they think people like (former governors) Jim Edgar, Big Jim Thompson, and George Ryan are conservatives.

Maybe they are, compared to that organized crime gang masquerading as a political party called the Democrats, but they sure as hell aren't conservative.

Case in point: A few years ago there was an election between an obscure downstate representative named Glenn Poshard, a Democrat. He was a pro-life, pro second amendment, fiscally conservative candidate for governor. Opposing him was George Ryan. A Republican party apparatchik, hack, and long time member of the Illinois Politician General Corruption Scheme. He was a pro abortion, pro-Statist, Daley allie.

Illinois Republicans didn't elect elected a person with whom they disagreed politically just to remain loyal to the GOP; they elected George Ryan because they agreed with him on the issues.

So, Kirk has a good chance at being the next Republican senator from Illinois, but, unfortunately, count him in with the suburban country club, General Powell-loving "moderate" nincompoops that have acted with fishbowls on their heads for the last twenty years apparently.

Not voting for him. I’d rather vote “present.” The deal was his Cap & Trade vote for a clear shot at the Senate seat. Lisa is willing to wait to get to Washington. Rather have someone in the seat that I know is an enemy than someone being passed off as a conservative Republican. We have enough politicians like that—that’s why we are in the mess we are in...
