BRENTWOOD, Calif. (AP)
Staff and visitors at the world-famous Getty Center art complex in Los Angeles were being evacuated because of a nearby brush fire.
The fire, which was burning at 1200 Getty Center Drive near the northbound 405 Freeway, has scorched approximately two acres.
A Getty spokesman estimated 800 employees were working in the complex Wednesday. They're being told to leave along with an unknown number of visitors.
A plume of smoke could be seen from miles away, as the fire spread quickly through heavy brush.
About 50 firefighters were battling the blaze along with a helicopter.
The Getty Center is perched on the brush-covered Santa Monica Mountains above the west side of Los Angeles.
And the rest of America should care about this why?
now..now..it’s a beautiful part of California, the center holds tons of irreplaceable art and the landscape is breathtaking..not to mention the financial hardships it were bring to an already difficult situation. I would care if it were in your neighborhood.
“it were bring”? Sorry, I meant “it will bring”.
AMAZING museum of priceless antiquities.
My office is looking out at it ... very scary.
well said.
It houses some of the most important art and artifacts in America and there are many homes and families being threatened. Of course, it DOES cut into important Michael Jackson news coverage....
Move yornself offa the thread then. Sheesh.
Prayers for the firefighters!!!
The Ghetty is a world class art museum with many irreplaceable treasures.
Do you go often? I thik it might be one of the most beautiful museums in the world...the limestone and marble, the gardens are just out of this world...everyone should get a chance to see LA from the top of the hill.
Have you been to The Villa? The Etruscan treasures alone are worth the trip.
Yes, I go often ... and the Getty Villa in Malibu is incredible. J.P. Getty is buried there BTW.
I am on the 25th floor of a skyscraper looking at the Getty. It is my favorite view of the 4 views we have. It beats the heack out of the view of the Pacific Ocean because of the way the light falls.
Great museum.
Gone now then...bye
O I love the Villa, I could spend all day there, the art and the view of the Pacific from the cafe with a glass of wine...makes one so grateful for the beauty that God has given us.
And the building is amazing. Marble quarries that had been closed for centuries were opened for the Getty Villa. The building is a replica of the villa unearthed at Herculeanium ... destroyed during the Vesuvius eruption.
It is like being in a newly built villa ... not a ruin. With marvelous herbal gardens. I love the inner courtyards built open to the sky, as they were in ancient Rome ...
The coffins with painting of the owner inside were fascinating.
They have a website!
1. It had been dated yesterday.
2. GETTY Center had been replaced with STAPLES Center.
No still haven’t been to the Villa since it reopened...keep putting it off. I love the view in that part of LA where your office is. I belonged to a golf club up on the hillside looking down on Wilshire (especially looking down on UCLA) and smoked a lot of stogies while the sun turned everything into the golden state...I love LA...too bad all the fruits and nuts have given it such a bad rep...
Priceless treasures usually looted from foreign countries.
“Evil” Getty made his money in oil. Actually with the exception of liking lots of woman, he was a very bright guy who worked very hard.
Actually, it is a wonderful place to live. There are more Conservatives here than most people think. My office is almost all Conservative.
And, it’s my hometown!
I use to live 5 minutes from there in Brentwood. I miss the place.
