She's wowed crowds in London and Paris but the trademark flamboyance of Michelle Obama, wife of the US president, was nowhere to be seen this week in Moscow, where leaders' spouses get little attention.
After descending from Air Force One on Monday behind her husband and with their two daughters, Michelle Obama virtually disappeared from the public eye as Barack Obama filled Russian television screens, websites and newspapers.
"Russian protocol apparently sought to contain news about Barack Obama's wife so as not to break with Russian political tradition," said Olga Kryshtanovskaya, a social and political commentator.
"In contrast with the West, where Michelle Obama draws practically the same media interest as her husband, Russia remains a patriarchal country, at least on a political level," Kryshtanovskaya said.
Shortly after her arrival on Monday, Michelle Obama was given a Kremlin museum tour by Svetlana Medvedeva, the wife of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
The excursion received little media attention, although a brief blurb and small photograph of the two first ladies walking side by side was published by the popular daily Komsomolskaya Pravda.
On Tuesday, the US first lady visited a local school and orphanage before attending a music and folk-dancing concert, along with her daughters Sasha and Malia and over 500 Russian children.
Dressed in an ivory and black sheath dress, she also attended a speech that her husband gave for graduates of a Moscow economics school.
But her programme in Moscow was subdued and received scant media attention in Russia, by comparison with her high-profile shopping excursion in Paris and visit to a London pub earlier this spring.
The snippets of television news footage showing her on the first day of the US-Russia summit were confined mainly to her accompanying Barack Obama as

Good grief. Doesn’t she own a mirror?
Moosechelle .....
MO was seen in beachwear holding a beach ball and in evening wear holding a flashlight.
Michelle thinks she is the Queen of Con. She doesn’t even rate next to these people.
Other news stories said the girls did not attend the visit to the orphange, but rather stayed back at the hotel with Grandma, "making dolls."
Two of the children gave her homemade presents one of them an intricate origami figure and a girl in a wheelchair asked Obama in Russian if she had any children. The first lady responded through a translator that she has two daughters Malia and Sasha who she said remained behind in the hotel with their grandmother.
Michelle already knows two words "Dolce and Gabbana".
Putin sends a "warm" birthday message to President Bush telling him, "I always valued your openness and sincerity."(as opposed to Obama?)
He treats Obama to a "Russian style" breakfast where tea made over "a big coal-fired kettle" is served. (lol)
And, with the U.S. economy going to hell-in-a-handbasket thanks to Obama's policies, Obama is making a speech for "graduates of a Moscow economics school. (Maybe he should have been listening to speeches by them.)
Somebody in Russia has a sense of humor.
That was not a joke. It was a slap in the face. I love it!
Yes, it was a slap in the face. I’m just saying the ones who did it probably got a great deal of humor and satisfaction from it.
I said earlier that I’ll bet Putin enjoyed his breakfast a lot better than Obama enjoyed it. Ha.
I really don’t know much about Russian humor, but I guess we’ll find out, eh? Caviar for breakfast in Moscow, Communist capital of the world. The Marxist Resident’s dream come true, but Putin is so far ahead of O in the political game, O didn’t even know what hit him. Hey, has anyone heard what gift O gave Putin? Maybe it was a blackberry just like his so they could keep in touch? Is all of O’s posts to his blackberry being recorded?
Just don’t clarify: Obviously I could care less that the First Lady has a big ass. I am just fascinated that her adoring press has gone to such lengths to cover it up.
Please forgive me, but what, exactly Is “ball dust?”
Good morning, I typed “Bull Dust”, which means dried up bull ghit.
My, what a way to start a political day with explaining a term used in order not to use vulgarity.
:)
