VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.
The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.
Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.
The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.
Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

Re-purposing the UN - to what end? In Section 42 he says,
[...]"ensure that the redistribution of wealth does not come about through the redistribution or increase of poverty"Redistribution of wealth is the end. With that purpose in view, the principle of subsidiarity starts looking a lot like "community organizing", and, Think Globally, Act Locally.
He says in 57, from which you quoted -
[...]"A particular manifestation of charity [...]Hence the principle of subsidiarity is particularly well-suited to managing globalization and directing it towards authentic human development. In order not to produce a dangerous universal power of a tyrannical nature, the governance of globalization must be marked by subsidiarity, articulated into several layers and involving different levels that can work together. Globalization certainly requires authority, insofar as it poses the problem of a global common good that needs to be pursued. This authority, however, must be organized in a subsidiary and stratified way, if it is not to infringe upon freedom and if it is to yield effective results in practice.
Principle of subsidiarity or not, anything enforced at the barrel of a gun cannot by any stretch of imagination be considered "charity".
You have heard the saying, Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a dangerous servant and a fearful master."
I personally am not interested in being trampled under the boots of deranged people who think themselves authoritative, elite, competent "managers of globalization" and redistribution of wealth.
Cordially,
The next Pope is supposedly, according to prophecy, an evil Pope and he COULD be the anti-Christ but we’ll have to wait and see. I have no idea if that’s true or not.
There will never be unity and peace until after the Lord returns. He should know that.
With all due respect Pope Benedict, stay out of politics....tend to your church, stop meddling.
(Just a little joke folks, don't go all Torquemada on me)
The American experiment started out as a re-distribution of wealth scheme of socialist Utopians? Well, actually the Pilgrims did try socialism for the first year and they almost starved themselves out of existence before they came to their senses. But the American experiment is essentially self-government, and for self government under God we don't need global dictators to govern us. As William Penn put it, "if men will not be governed by God, they will be ruled by tyrants." We believe in self government under God, not under godless socialist dictators with global reach.
So, re-reading the paragraph you cited in this light, to me, it seems that the Pope is saying that the UN needs to be reformed, reformed to abide by its original intent (or charter)
The original intent of the UN Charter was the brainchild of Communists.
Why object to it? Let me make my hypothetical scenario clear: What if the UN (or some other world body by some other name) were modified/created and it behaved exactly as the US Federal government was supposed to behave?
Why object to a world government? You answered your own question by saying "the way the US Federal government is supposed to behave." Do you suppose the Federal government stays within its Constitutional prescribed limits? What makes you suppose that Godless tyrants with global reach would even think of restraining themselves by quaint ideas of subsidiarity and limited government? You might as well expect liberal Supreme Court justices to limit their interpretations of law to the original intent of the Framers. What human experience can you point to that governments ever restrains itself?

I’ll click on the Freedom link.
Very nice to see you too, diamond. Hope you’re well.
Absolutely — read the link from Catholic Culture — the one further down. One of the sections of the encyclical talks about the sacredness of the family and the abomination of abortion.
The Bible does say that the Anti-Christ will rise up from among the very people who crucified Christ (the Romans), that’s how we can know Obama isn’t the Anti-Christ arrived on the scene. That doesn’t mean it’ll be the Pope, certainly, but the AC will likely use the Pope to achieve his goal of a global religion and global economy/government.
All well and good, but:
1. How does the Pope think that cesspool United Nations is going to be cleaned up enough, and converted to Christianity so as to do all those beautiful things?
2. And, you haven’t answered, “What lies did Reuters tell?”
Globabl authority. Yikes. Sounds like something the anti-christ would want. Hmmm ...
Agreed that he's practicing outside of his area of expertise. In some pursuits that could get you and me arrested.
