It was meant to be a show case for healthy living, with the first lady, Michelle Obama, personally putting hand to pitch fork in a crowd of school children to dig up the first White House vegetable garden in more than 50 years.

Instead, an embarrassed White House admitted today that the plot - whose lettuce, herbs and other produce have been consumed by the first family, visiting dignitaries, local school children and a women's homeless shelter - had tested positive for elevated levels of lead.

The White House would not say whether the Obamas or the children who had helped tend the garden would be tested for lead exposure.

“My grandfather started smoking unfiltered Camels when he was 7 years old”

I smoke Pall Malls unfiltered and didn’t start until I was 11, can’t stand cigarettes with tampax on the end, and am only 72.

God bless you, dalereed!

I should point out that my grandfather's heart disease was probably not from the tobacco. It was probably from the alcohol.

“If you can’t understand Wikipedia do I have to post in crayon?”

Not a matter of understanding, it’s a matter of not believing anything than anyone would place there.

I have no use for or respect for anyone that would place anything there.

Here’s an article from Mayo Clinic:

Lead Poisoning

By Mayo Clinic staff

Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body, often over a period of months or years. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems. Children under the age of 6 are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.

Lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in older buildings are the most common sources of lead poisoning in children. Other sources of lead poisoning include contaminated air, water, soil, and some toys and cosmetics.

"This stuff was trucked in I'm sure. Many, many cubic feet were needed to fill this 1,100 sq foot garden. WHO supplied the soil? OR: WHAT was it amended with? Its’ possible that the garden is not as ORGANIC as advertised."

Wasn't there a photo comparison on drudge when they harvested? It was like 35 days after planting and the garden went from seedlings to tremendous plants.

My first thought was that they had someone re-planting bigger plants constantly to show how great their garden is.

Really... 35 days from seedlings to harvest? Let's assume a full time gardener is there to take care (obviously). That is a little quick right? Mid June and harvesting? I don't know Washington D.C., but it sounds early...

So what is the point of the lead thing? Are we being set up for new regulations or is it an innocent thing? [tongue only half in cheek] gardening and home improvement would be a nice big industry for Obama, Inc. to take over.

If you put 2+2 together you come up with they trucked in lead contaminated soil for an organic gardening. Now that is too funny!

As a sidenote, who gardens in white pants? When I work in my garden, I am not about to wear white or any other light color.

That sounds very familiar to the Wikipedia entry, they are not a great source but they do correct entries for lies and falsehoods.

Basically Wiki is for lightweights which is why I chose it for the guy who doesn’t believe in lead poisoining. First link in a very easy search.

Google or izquick it and there’s a ton of easy links.

Not all veggies are in raised beds.

There are photos floating around of shovels being used. I don't recall if the children were digging or raking. No one does this on newly placed raised beds.

Isn't there a photo of mooshelle on her knees planting? There was no indication the soil was in raised beds.

“Really... 35 days from seedlings to harvest?”

Not really, they are spring harvest vegetables. And it wasn’t 35 days, they were in the ground longer.

I checked the Burpee seed catalog and found you could plant seeds in March and harvest in June. They planting seedlings, not seeds.

I didn’t believe it either until I checked. Some can be harvested from seeds in as little as 45 days. Seedlings already have a couple of weeks already.

And you can bet they were taken care of by the WH gardeners while the Zeroes were shopping in London and Paris.

"The White House would not say whether the Obamas or the children who had helped tend the garden would be tested for lead exposure."

They won't be tested.
It will be reported that the greens eaten were actually store bought after all!

Come to think of it, the Obamas messed up kids. Now they won't want to eat their vegetables. They will have to go through therapy to overcome their fear of greens.

” Little of the White House’s existing soil was used as a growing medium.

This stuff was trucked in I’m sure.”

Important point to keep in mind. The trucked in organic soil was full of lead.

I still think Obama should resign over “LeadGate”.

Friday March 20, 2009

“We’re going to have a beehive,” Michelle Obama announced Friday to “ooohs” and “ahhhs” from Washington-area school children wielding shovels and rakes and hoes to help with the garden groundbreaking. “I’m glad you’re excited, but because my kids aren’t very excited about the beehive. But we’re going to try to make our own honey.”

In leggings and flat black boots, Mrs. Obama turned soil with a shovel and pitchfork, saying plants will go in the ground – mint, lettuces, berries and perennial herbs – in the next several weeks, with the harvest to be used in both the White House kitchen and a nearby soup kitchen.

Don’t worry. To get even, they’re already thinking about regulating/outlawing private vegetable gardens.
