The Nantucket Tea Party will be one of more than a thousand such protest events to be held across the nation on Independence Day.
The organizers were all set. They were given permission by the Towns head of Park and Recreation. After the local paper publicized the event, some members of the Nantucket Park and Recreation Commission decided to forget about the First Amendment. One local official was quoted as saying we dont want politics on Main Street. Apparently the head of Park and Recreation was overruled by the commissioners.
The Nantucket Tea Party then got permission to use a banks private property. A Town official then advised the Nantucket Tea Party that the Tea Party must obtain a permit to block the sidewalk even though the street is closed! The Nantucket Tea Party got the Police, Fire and Public Works departments sign off on the event, but the Park and Recreation department balked.
Now the Nantucket Tea Party has been restricted to the steps of a bank. The town government will not allow the Nantucket Tea Party to be part of the Independence Day celebration on Main Street as had been planned.
Nantuckets heavy handed attempt to quash the Nantucket Tea Party is a sad commentary on what too many so-called leaders in this country think about freedom and our rights.

Amazing ... if it were some gay rights parade it would go on as planned ... and the local libs would be walking around high fiving one another, congratulating themselves as progressives.
So sad but so true!
Typical.
“...we dont want politics on Main Street.
Then where the hell are politics supposed to be?
These liberal pukes have got to be turned around and kicked out the door at every opportunity.
My wife and I will be at our TEA Party in Fort Lauderdale.
It’s 10AM at Broward and 4th BTW.
See the whole point of REVOLUTION is so we don’t need permits.
... and now the grave of American liberty.
Change the name to Gay Patriot Tea Party. No one would turn down a title like that in fear of discriminating against gays, in this case “happy” patriot tea party.
This is america, so no conservatives allowed anymore. Just special interest groups are allowed to participate.
I’m with you. It could be an interesting morning...
The funny thing is that we’d gladly welcome gay patriots. Patriots of all shapes, sizes and colors are welcome. As long as they’re patriots first and formost!
Would it have been criminal to have applied for the permit as a gay rights party? And then once you got it, have the scheduled event as a tea party instead, and see if they have the nerve to shut you down on grounds of the content of your message?
Interesting question. Fun to ponder. Regardless, we’ll be there. I wonder if any ACORN types will be there?
Well it looks like to me this is the point where you go ahead and hold the Tea Party exactly where you first intended to hold it!
Sarah has read the tea leaves!
Yes, sir! That’s exactly what is going to happen! As I’ve heard in AA, “Half-measures avail us nothing.”
Hoist a cuppa tea to salute Sarah.
Team Sarah is a diverse coalition of Americans dedicated to advancing the values that Sarah Palin represents in the political process.
that’s “NO say” Spell check doesn’t catch em all.

So Nantucket, is trying to violate the right to assemble. They should be challenged in court, so as not to interfere with the next Tea Party.
