With respect to many of the Palinologists below, I think they're getting way too hepatomantic over the entrails.
As a political move for anything other than the 2010 Senate race, today's announcement is a disaster. And I'm not sure it's a plus for the Senate - and, even if it were, the manner and timing suggest it was not a professionally planned event and therefore is unlikely to have any grand strategy behind it.
So Occam's Razor leaves us with: Who needs this?
In states far from the national spotlight, politics still attracts normal people. You're a mayor or a state senator or even the governor, but you lead a normal life. The local media are tough on you, but they know you, they live where you live, they're tough on the real you, not on some caricature cooked up by a malign alliance of late-night comics who'd never heard of you a week earlier and media grandees supposedly on your own side who pronounce you a "cancer".
Then suddenly you get the call from Washington. You know it'll mean Secret Service, and speechwriters, and minders vetting your wardrobe. But nobody said it would mean a mainstream network comedy host doing statutory rape gags about your 14-year old daughter. You've got a special-needs kid and a son in Iraq and a daughter who's given you your first grandchild in less than ideal circumstances. That would be enough for most of us. But the special-needs kid and the daughter and most everyone else you love are a national joke, and the PC enforcers are entirely cool with it.
Most of those who sneer at Sarah Palin have no desire to live her life. But why not try to - what's the word? - "empathize"? If you like Wasilla and hunting and snowmachining and moose stew and politics, is the last worth giving up everything else in the hopes that one day David Letterman and Maureen Dowd might decide Trig and Bristol and the rest are sufficiently non-risible to enable you to prosper in their world? And, putting aside the odds, would you really like to be the person you'd have to turn into under that scenario?
National office will dwindle down to the unhealthily singleminded (Clinton, Obama), the timeserving emirs of Incumbistan (Biden, McCain) and dynastic heirs (Bush). Our loss.
Reagan had a long and storied career outside of elected office.
I’ve answered this several times.
I’m not pushing anyone, I’m just warning against the inevitable disaster that a Palin-0bama rematch would bring for the GOP.
Palin obviously also recognizes she’s not up to the task of governing and doesn’t think the media spotlight is worth it.
I think her rabid supporters pushing her to run for president are as much to blame for her resignation as her detractors in the media.
I think it is sad that this woman has been pulled in all directions like this ever since joining McCain’s ticket.
Maybe everybody should just leave her alone and let her go back to normal life with her family. She’s not going to be president. She doesn’t want to be president. She doesn’t want to be in the media spotlight at all anymore.
You and Steyn are most likely right, but let's give this some time. Whatever her dreams now, I am praying for her success. If she has chosen a future that precludes political aspirations, she has at least served as an example and a beacon for hope for Conservatives that we haven't seen the likes of since Reagan. God bless her in her future plans. Based on yesterday's speech, I'm not counting her completely out yet.
Jindal is serving out his term. Unless I’m missing something, I think he’s my next person to support.
As for Romney, Huckster, and that other ass, I fully agree.
Agreed. Reading some of the cult-of-personality Palinites on other threads, they have idolized SP as some Superhuman Goddess of Mythical Proportions.
So desperate are they for a counter-messiah to Obama, they can’t BEGIN to think that maybe, just maybe, this is a normal human being puts her personal responsibilities above fulfilling their hyperinflated expectations of her.
This country is not ready for a female president, and especially one that is not yet ready for prime time. It would take a highly gifted and respected woman to ever be elected POTUS. There is not any female today, in either political party, that has the gravitas to be elected to that office.
I wish nothing but the best for Sarah and her family, but she is not going to be the leader of the GOP or of the conservatives. We have no leaders at this time.

I’m not denying she had supporters last November, or now for that matter.
She just didn’t have nearly as many as 0bama had.
60 million people came out to vote for her. That’s fewer than Bush got 4 years earlier. Hell, that’s fewer than Kerry got 4 years earlier. But 0bama got 70 million people to come out and vote for him.
There just aren’t enough people out there willing to support Palin to beat 0bama.
The first step to recovering from a loss is accepting defeat. Many FReepers aren’t yet ready to move on from 2008, which is why they still cling to Palin. But it is a destructive relationship. She’s no good for us, and we are no good for her.
We need to move on and find someone new to champion as the leader of the GOP. Right now, as you may have noticed, the Republican party is leaderless. That implies Sarah Palin is not the leader. So let’s cut bait and find one.
She announced her candidacy today, or didn't up notice WHAT she said? She has no need to state the obvious.
Why do you think your opinion is the ONLY opinion. There are more of us than you, FRiend. Go troll something about Zero... or just keep pimping for Romney. Actions are louder than words.

Hats off to all the FReepers, I’m out. If Sarah isn’t running I’ve lost interest in politics. Obama will probably be president for the rest of my life or close to it. If she runs again I’ll hear about it and see you guys and gals then. I’ve really enjoyed my time here, it’s been fun.

I wonder if Mark Steyn's treatment at the hands of the Canadian courts has opened his range finder the slightest bit--
--to see Palin has removed the target for the frivolous lawsuits and freed her calendar for campaigning for conservatives for 2010--
--the type of campaigning which was part of the Reagan strategy--
I had enough of professionally planned events--Obama mid the Columns of Ancient Styrofoamia comes to mind.
No doubt we'll enjoy Mark while Rush golfs next week.
Alaska's in good hands and the biggest vote-getter for the party of Lincoln and Reagan is free to inspire the 2010 take-back.
For now on, everytime we mention Her, it should be followed by “Peace Be Upon Her.”
We should talk conservative issues and let the politicians catch up to us.

I think it’s up to that person to step forward.
The election is 3 years away.
There is plenty of time.
The 0bamessiah himself didn’t step forward before his Democrat flock until 2007. Hillary had been their false prophet starting the day after Kerry lost in 2004.
So let’s wait and see who emerges.
I suspect it will be someone none of us would name today.
Perhaps someone few of us have even heard of yet.
