QUOTE OF THE MONTH
Remarks by the President in Meeting with Leadership of National Service Organizations
The Roosevelt Room - July 2, 2001

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Thank you all for coming. Laura and I are so honored to welcome leaders from five of the largest service organizations in our country -- the Lions, Rotarians, Optimists, Kiwanis, Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

First, thank you all for coming and thank you for your service to the country. We've had a discussion that will really help change the country, I think, and that is all five organizations have agreed to join in urging their members to mentor a child.

We've set a goal amongst us to recruit 1 million mentors to provide love and comfort to the children around America. I can't think of a more noble goal for the organizations here. So I want to thank you all very much for your commitment to America, for your love of the country. Please thank your members for their commitment, as well.

For others around the country who are wondering how best to help a neighbor in need, I strongly urge them to think about joining one of these service clubs, a club whose sole existence is to help make America a better place. And so, I know there are some in our country that say what can I do to help. Well, here is five good opportunities.

One of the things you do when you run for office, you get to go to service club lunches all around our country. (Laughter.) And I will tell you, some of the most meaningful lunches as a gubernatorial candidate, for example, in Texas was at service clubs in rural Texas or in urban Texas. I was able to meet a lot of really good, fine folks.

America is strong because of our people. America is strong because of the compassion of our citizens. And I believe we can meet the goal of a million mentors, so that everybody in America feels the great promise of our country and so that not one child is left behind.

One of the reasons I picked this quote was because one of our dearest and sadly late host Gretchen mentored children and recently I have had the privilege to contact a friend of hers again and be reminded of her great heart and legacy.

Wonderful photos. Sure wish we could have him back in the White House. He’s such a gentleman. He and First Lady Laura have sooooooooo much class. What great representatives of all that’s good about the United States.

Thank you for posting, Snugs.

Of all the pictures of George W. Bush, this is the one that tells me the most about the man.

While I disagreed with him on so many critical issues, I did not doubt that he loved his country and wanted the best for it, and for us.

If you have Quicktime, here is a link to a video on my website that also says a lot about George W. Bush (If you don't have Quicktime, you can read it):

Though Bush was not perfect (none of us are), nor did I agree with each and every policy move he made, I do however truly appreciate his service to and for this country during a time when strong leadership was needed and required.

Thank you.

One of my favorites.

Enterprise, AL- On March 3, 2007 President George W. Bush visited the devastated community of Enterprise, Alabama, ravaged by a savage tornado that took the young lives of 8 high school students at Enterprise High School.President Bush toured the area in Marine 1, viewing the remnants of a once peaceful Alabama town.

Arriving at the High School at approximately 8:30, he walked the remains the High School with Principal Rick Ranier, stopping in Hallway 3, the site of the deaths of 8 young Enterprise High School students ...

Megan Parks raised her hand slightly, then hung her head and began to cry. President Bush put his arms around Megan and Sarah Carroll and all three cried. A secret service officer standing nearby, although not able to hear every word, reported that he could hear the President quoting scripture and then he said, "It's tough being President, isn't it?"

Thank you for all of your posts, snugs. The 8 GWB years were, indeed, a dose of sanity tucked in between the nightmare years of Clinton and now Obama.

Will we ever again have such an honorable president?

Hey.

Star - you and I had a disagreement about GW Bush in the past. I just wanted to say I am sorry if I ever portrayed a bad image of a Christian man. Please accept my apologies.

I have a disagreement with what GW Bush started, namely, the Socialism that Obama has been able to capitalize on.

That aside, I miss the man.

I also like this picture.
