After a "Buy American" provision in the stimulus bill triggered a tit-for-tat with Canada, President Obama is warning fellow Democrats to think twice about another "protectionist" measure in the House-passed climate change bill.
The climate bill that passed the House last week on a 219-212 vote includes a provision to impose tariffs -- starting in 2020 -- on imports from countries that don't have a system for limiting global warming pollution.
The provision was pushed as a way to keep the U.S. competitive with other countries that haven't imposed rules to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy.

I think the only hope is that it cripples industry in a couple of states with Democrat Senators and that they take a second look; particularly MI and WV.
I don’t hold out a whole lot of hope for this.
The only decent spin to put on this is that it should fuel a conservative comeback in 2010, or that it will be “the shot heard round the world”.
Certainly, no one with any sense is going to buy Obama’s 11th hour rhetoric when they are on the receiving end of this legislation. If he knows how bad the bill is he shouldn’t sign it into law.
He owns it.
FACTS: 1) greenhouse gases are not evil, they are essential to keeping the earth warm enough for humans; 2) the most common greenhouse gas is water vapor; 3) CO2 is not pollution, it is essential for plants and humans; 4) CO2 is only a trace element in the atmosphere at 380 parts per million; 5) humans and their activities account for only 3 to 5% of CO2 emissions each year - volcanoes contribute more than people; 6) the earth has had cycles of cooling and warming about every 1,500 years due to variations in the suns activity and our orbit around the sun; 7) these cycles are beyond human control; 8) about 1,000 years ago, Greenland had vineyards; 9) the earth is cooling now, not warming relative to prior decades; and 10) a major reduction of sun spots in recent years suggests a coming mini ice age.
If more people knew how much damage Cap & Trade will do to our economy, they would be shouting their disapproval. But apparently most voters dont even know what Cap & Trade is all about.
Heres how the cap & trade legislation will adversely impact our entire economy and standard of living:

In five years the United States of Obama will look just like North Korea in that night time satelite photo.
This was his express intention during the primary. To undo NAFTA.
Now that Imelt of GE has warned him against ‘protectionism’ which HE installed in the so called stimulus bill.....he’s warning congress.
My head is spinning.
As I said on another thread, it wasn’t enough that they’re adopting domestic measures that have been described as “making Smoot-Hawley look like a corporate welfare program,” no, they need to put a rewrite of Smoot-Hawley in the bleedin’ bill.
As far as I see it ... After HW Bush, Clinton, Bush and now this usurper Hussein, I don’t think we can take any more damage hoping it will help us.
We simply don’t have time to wait until 2010.
I’ve always though that Bush left us in a situation where his successor would have to make every move exactly perfectly to avoid the collapse of our republic. Obviously this has not happened.
The republic is dead. My only hope is to revive the corpse before it goes cold.
You think there will be Democrat defections?
Oh, I don’t see that. The conservative’s favorite little domestic leftist, Lieberman, must have a warm, fuzzy feeling in his solar plexus over this.
He is the first I may think of as a defection. All this leftist, statist domestic crap is right up his alley.

Don't count on it. Filibuster proof Senate now.
“DOA in Senate....” Now that they have 60 senators, it may not be DOA....
Indeed, I think Obama would prefer them to adopt more of a "kowtowist" or a "suckupist" measure instead.
He lies.
Come on, the North Koreans just have a “sustainable” lifestyle.
Obama prefers the anti-protectionist approach. He wants to slap a 14% tax on oil and gas that Americans pull out of the Gulf of Mexico, but not on the oil and gas Mexicans pull out of the Gulf, thus effectively increasing the profit margin of Mexican oil and gas by an additional 14% of market price.
Good article. I just can’t believe that the nowhere man krugman had the nerve to write the piece and expect people to believe him.

Just to make everything “fair”, you aren’t going to get out of paying more taxes by buying foreign made stuff. Just great.
Let’s just say, there are OTHER ways of getting out of paying more taxes. :)
