The man accused of trying to gut a cat that belongs to a South Seattle church has changed his plea. Tracy Clark originally entered a not guilty plea to a first-degree animal cruelty charge in May for the April 20 attack that left Scat the cat with multiple stab wounds, including a 7-inch gash on its side.
But on Monday Clark changed his stance and entered a guilty plea.
The injured cat had been the pet therapy cat at the Cross Church & Discipleship Center for the past eight years.
Clark, 47, said he had enrolled in rehabilitation at the church, which offers a full-time residential discipleship program for distressed men.
Clark told deputies the cat attacked him first, forcing him to defend himself. He said he grabbed the cat by the throat, threw it against the wall and admitted to stabbing Scat with his own knife, according to court documents.
Another resident of the church told investigators Clark woke him up some time after he had gone to bed on Sunday night, and said he had "gutted the cat," according to a police report.

Poor kitty!
As a cat lover, I’m skeptical of the self-defense claim.
You too? I was kind of thinking the same thing.
OMG! He looks like my long-gone beloved Ashley-washley!
Poor kitty! Don’t be surprised if this cat goes back to being “skeptical” of people - men? - again.
I Pray the Lord of Heaven punishes this 'man,' unless he sincerely Repents.
Some people should not be around animals. Period.
If the “cat attacked first” the toss against the wall would have stopped the attack.
Indeed.
As a cat lover, Im skeptical of the self-defense claim.
If that cat is like our cat, it was just a "hello bite."
Have an NFL DLineman grab him by the neck and throw him against the wall, then have someone else slice him open, then drop him at a vet’s office.
THEN, put him in jail for a lot longer than 9 months.
On top of that, I hope he gets abused in prison - both verbally and physically. “Hey, here’s the church cat stabber!”
P.O.S. belongs in the ground.
Yeah, me too. What a piece of filth.
As a cat-lover who was once attacked by a crazed stray tom-cat, I know that it actually is possible to find oneself in a true self-defense situation with a cat. I had to lean down on that cat with my full weight to get any control at all over over it, and then I grabbed it by its arm and threw it with full force against a cinderblock wall — and then it tried to come at me again! I had blood literally spurting out my ankle by that point — still have visible scars from it 18 years later.
However, the victim in this case was not a stray tom-cat, but a well-socialized therapy cat. Sounds like this church needs to start being a LOT more careful about screening people for their “discipleship” programs. This nut could just as easily have flipped out and hacked up a human. He belongs in a secure psych ward.
Not in my experience. But I don't believe for a second that this church cat attacked the man.
Cats can be vicious there’s no doubt about that. I’ve come across some cats that were really scared and couldn’t be handled. Grabbing them by the scruff will pretty much make them go limp.
