Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Nurses Rally for Strong Swine Flu Protection

More than 100 nurses, wearing surgical masks and carrying signs that read “Nurses and Patients Demand Swine Flu Protection,” rallied Wednesday at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center to spotlight unsafe practices in treating H1N1 (swine) flu patients and protecting health care workers and other patients.
The nurses, members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), also protested the recent firing by UCSF of an RN who blew the whistle on unsafe patient care involving swine flu at the facility.
A recent study by CNA/NNOC of California hospitals uncovered widespread problems, including systemic trouble with safety gear for nurses and infection control procedures for patients, as well as an emerging pattern of retribution against nurses who speak out about unsafe care.
In April, a report by the AFL-CIO and several unions revealed that health care workers are at risk because many of the nation’s health care facilities are not prepared to deal with a pandemic.
Last week, a U.S. Government Accountability Office report to Congress warned the United States is still not adequately prepared for a potentially large outbreak of H1N1 this fall. The action came just weeks after a nurse at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael died of the H1N1 flu. Says CNA/NNOC co-President Deborah Burger, RN:
Hospitals across California—and possibly the entire country—are putting registered nurses and other front-line caregivers at risk by inadequately preparing for this pandemic.
If hospitals do not take urgent precautions to reverse this lack of preparation, we may see our health care facilities become vectors for infections. That is especially worrisome for hospital patients who already have compromised immune systems, and our nurses who may be unable to respond because of their own sickness.
The nurse who was fired for speaking out, says CNA/NNOC, recently started working at the facility when she was exposed to the virus in June.
While still suffering from the infection, she protested to management about inadequate hospital safety standards that she felt contributed to her illness.
Ultimately, the RN was fired in, what CNA/NNOC calls, retaliation against a swine flu whistle-blower.
Earlier this summer, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a Phase-6 pandemic, its highest level of warning. WHO reported the death toll at 1,154, in data published this week.

A pandemic flu might create a run on stocking up and wipe out local grocery store supplies in hours. Stores here generally carry a three-day supply of food. Witness the runs on milk, bread, and fresh and frozen items when a snowstorm is predicted.
Preparedness experts are recommending that households stock a two-week supply of food and a three-month supply of medications now. Unlike a weather disaster, a pandemic should not shut down electricity, water, other utilities, the Internet, or phones. There is some concern that if citizens are at home from work and children are not in school, activity on the Internet could be extremely heavy.
For long sieges at home, parents may want to bring in old-fashioned board games, books, and DVDs to keep children engaged, suggests Dena Howard, director of Partner Services for the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter.

I say “hats off to you!” I having been researching, emailing, posting here and there, since I first learned of Jane Burgermeister’s Filing of Criminal Charges on June 25 from one of my onlne health newsletters, NaturalNews.com. I think we need to focus on what we can do to help ourselves and our families. I have family members in denial that there is anything nefarious about the H1N1, and I am stressed out over that, as well as staying at the computer for 16-20 hours a day. We need to really focus on helping others and try to just not get upset by others who haven’t got a clue, and don’t care to learn. That’s my rant for today, I promise.

The third confirmed case is a 28-year-old American female who is working in Singapore. She returned to Singapore from Honolulu via Tokyo on Tuesday, 26 May at 2353 hrs, on United Airlines, UA 803. She was seated at 33C. She became unwell on 26 May.
She returned to Singapore on flight United Airlines 803 from Honolulu via Tokyo on 26 May 2353 hrs. She became unwell while on board and passed through the thermal scanner at the airport as she did not have a fever then. She was referred by her company doctor to TTSH for assessment on 27 May afternoon via a 993 ambulance. Laboratory results confirmed her infection at 1610 hours on 28 May.
For the above cases, they have been discharged from CDC today as they have been cleared of H1N1 virus. They are now on medical leave.
The above descriptions match the patient linked to the recently released NA sequence, A/Singapore/57/2009, by the CDC at GISAID. Although the sequence represents the earliest reported case of H274Y in pandemic H1N1, it was released without fanfare on Thursday. Media reports (see Singapore map) contained the information in the first paragraph above. This information, and the additional information described in Singapore MOH press releases, indicate the case was mild and made no mention of Tamiflu treatment, consistent with the short course and discharge on May 31.
The characterization sheet indicates isolation was on May 30 from a 28 year old female, which is consistent with the above information. The first confirmed case in Singapore was on May 26, and above patient was the third confirmed case. It is the only patient matching age and gender, indicating she is the source of A/Singapore/57/2009. Since she developed symptoms while in flight, the infection was likely from a contact in Honolulu, which is similar to the history of the American traveler from San Francisco. She also had a mild case and refused Tamiflu, but recovered quickly. Although media reports indicated she had a fever when she landed, Hong Kong reports suggested she was asymptomatic at landing, but tested positive shortly thereafter. Thus, infections in both passengers were confirmed in countries in Asia, but infections were in the United States, where there have been no reported cases of Tamiflu resistance.
The export of Tamiflu resistance in the absence of detection in the United States sends a strong signal of a flawed surveillance system. Since both of these cases were mild, yet involved a fit H1N1 with H274Y, the failure to detect similar cases in California or Hawaii may be due to an emphasis on testing more severe cases. The decision to ignore and not report mild cases creates an environment for silent spread of the H1N1 as well as the associated Tamiflu resistance.
Moreover, the release of the sequence in August from a patient infected in April, raises concerns of more such examples in samples collected, but not sequenced, analyzed, or reported. These concerns have been heightened by the frequent detection of H274Y in patients receiving prophylactic Tamiflu, which would be among those most easily identified, as well as additional reports of resistance in China and Thailand, which lack information on the Tamiflu treatment status of the patients or in the case of Thailand, the sample collection date. The sample in China was collected on June 13, again signaling a long delay between sample collection and release of the associated sequences, suggesting that these patients were also not taking Tamiflu, and sequencing of these milder cases has a low priority or a large backlog.
The resistance in patients in Singapore, China, and Thailand released this week adds to concerns associated with the prior Tamiflu resistance cases in Denmark, Japan, Canada and Hong Kong (ex San Francisco), which support silent spread of Tamiflu resistance worldwide.

CAIRO, Aug 9 (KUNA) — Egyptian health authorities are concerned over a risk that the H1N1, which is commonly referred to as swine flu, and the much deadlier H5N1 avian flu virus could combine with seasonal human influenza.
Speaking to KUNA, Egyptian Minister of Health Hatem Al-Gabali said the bird and swine flu pose the same source of danger to human health, warning against potential mixed human cases.
He also cautioned that there are several strains of swine flu, just like seasonal influenza, possible the most serious of which is the new flu virus that combines swine, avian and human flu.
Therefore, he urged all citizens to be cautious and obey preventive measures in a serious manner given that avian flu has become endemic in Egypt.
He said Egypt had reported a total of 82 avian flu human cases since the virus outbreak in the country, including 27 death cases, which is the highest rate in the world.
The Egyptian government has set an effective preventive plan to curb the disease ahead of the school year, which would start as scheduled on September 26, with the first class week to be allocated for teaching schoolchildren how to prevent infection.
As many as 329 swine flu cases have been detected in Egypt so far, with only one death case, while 236 have recovered, and the remaining cases are still receiving medication at hospital.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had announced that the H1N1 virus was stable and there was no sign of it mixing with avian flu or other influenza viruses. Singapore reports one more A/H1N1 related death

Singapore’s Ministry of Health on Sunday reported one more flu A/H1N1 related death case, bringing the number of total A/H1N1 related fatalities here to nine.
According to a statement by the ministry, a 27-year-old Indian female with no known underlying medical conditions died on Saturday morning after her condition deteriorated. She went to the Changi General Hospital’s Emergency Department on July 23 with a 4day history of fever, cough and lethargy. The cause of her death has been certified as acute myocardial infarction, with Influenza A/H1N1 infection and pneumonia as contributing factors.
Singapore reported its first confirmed case of Influenza A/H1N1on May 27. The country’s first A/H1N1 related death case was recorded on July 18.

Madisonville research center to give H1N1 vaccines

MUHLENBURG CO., KY (WFIE) - Health officials tell us the number is rising a bit in Muhlenberg County.
67 people from the Muhlenberg Career Development Center have been treated.
Hopkins County still has only one confirmed case.
Commonwealth Biomedical Research in Madisonville began its study of a trial H1N1 vaccination Thursday morning.
Dr. Bret Wittmer says the vaccine was tested on 75 adult and children patients.
The research center in Madisonville is one of only two centers in the country to test this vaccine on children.
According to Dr. Wittmer, patients are excited to be a part of the study and realize its historic significance.
“A lot people participate in these trials because they see this as an assistance of man kind,” Dr. Wittmer said. “Not only with the flu vaccine but any trial they participate in.”
The research center will conduct the trial on 75 more patients tomorrow.
Dr. Wittmer said it will be several months before a swine flu vaccine is out on the market.

Doc, chemist with H1N1 battle for life

PUNE/NEW DELHI: As swine cases across the country rose, an ayurvedic doctor and a chemist infected with the H1N1 virus were battling for their lives on Friday in Pune, the city from which the first flu fatality was reported. Both the doctor and the chemist are on the ventilator.
Across India, 96 new cases were confirmed taking the total number of flu to 171. Alarmed by the spurt, the Union health ministry on Friday decided to allow private hospitals and labs with bio-safety level-II to conduct swab tests but only if these had isolation wards where positive cases could be quarantined. These private facilities are also required to have a real-time PCR, the gold-standard test to detect H1N1. Health authorities also directed fliers in high-risk groups, such as senior citizens, and heart patients, to wear masks at all times during the journey.
On Friday, Mumbai also reported its first flu-positive case - a school student. While school authorities denied the student had swine flu, health officials confirmed the case. The school will be shut from Monday. (at least they have the good sense to close the school, unlike some countries. Hope)
In Pune, the 36-year-old who had been suffering from an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) for a week, went to the Naidu government hospital to get his throat swabs taken. According to the doctor’s brother, authorities at Naidu hospital did not take his throat swab following which he went to a private hospital. When he started complaining of breathlessness on Wednesday, the hospital, suspecting it to be a case of swine flu, sent his swab for testing to the NIV on Thursday. The report, which was received early on Friday, showed that he was H1N1 positive.
The 35-year-old chemist from Hadapsar, who tested positive for the flu and was admitted to the Sassoon hospital on Thursday night, was said to be showing signs of improvement. He was brought to the in a critical condition, medical superintendent Pandurang Pawar said.
A six-year-old girl, who also tested positive for swine flu at a private hospital, was shifted to Sassoon hospital later in the evening. Her condition was stable, said Dr Pawar.
Ten people with whom the chemist came in contact over the past few days have been quarantined and under observation. Most of them are the chemist’s relatives. Eight of them have been quarantined at home while two are at Sassoon hospital.
The hospital has just two ventilators and has requisitioned for six more. Dr Pawar said he had enough Tamiflu tablets but has still asked for 5,000 more.
