Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Death toll of A/H1N1 flu rises to 18 in Italy

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-11/04/content_12382589.htm
ROME, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) — The death toll of H1N1 flu virus in Italy rose to 18 on Tuesday with a new toll near Naples.
Doctors said Fernando Lettieri, a 37-year-old jazz musician on dialysis following a kidney transplant, died of pneumonia compounded by a flu virus infection.
Lettieri is the ninth person to die of flu related causes in the Campania region around Naples after two women, 45 and 72, died in Naples on Monday.
Prosecutors said they were investigating the death of an apparently healthy 12-year-old girl from Naples suburb of Pompei. The girl died of the virus last weekend 48 hours after coming down with symptoms.
On Monday, the flu claimed its youngest Italian victim so far, an 11-year-old girl being treated for the flu at a hospital in Austria.
According to doctors, a 10-year-old boy in Rome who also died on Monday had a severe case of pneumonia but tested negative for the new flu.
Following the cases of children who became victims, families across the country, particularly in Rome and Naples, flocked to emergency rooms despite the health ministry appeals for people with flu symptoms to stay home and call their doctors, according to ANSA news agency.
Responding to parents’ concerns, Junior Health Minister Ferruccio Fazio said on Tuesday that children “are not at any greater risk of the virus than adults even though they are more prone to getting sick.”
Italian hospitals would begin vaccinating children by December ahead of the pandemic’s expected peak around New Year, he added.
According to Fazio, Italy will distribute a total of six million doses of the vaccine by the end of this month, as hospitals began immunizing pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses.
Fazio also said there were 30 people in Italy hospitalized with serious cases of the virus but insisted that the 18 victims in Italy so far “were less than half the European Union average.”
“Last year, seasonal influenza killed 8,000 people in Italy,” he said, citing the World Health Organization’s recent estimate of 700 deaths from the H1N1 virus worldwide.

Mother Grieves Toddler’s Swine Flu Related Death
Columbia, S.C. (WLTX) - There’s heartache for a young mother after her daughter dies of complications from the H1N1 virus, but she’s hoping her story can save others lives.
“If I could tell her anything, it would be, I would want her to come back home. But, it would be, I love you,”says Arkiea Jones.
She says she will never be able to tell her daughter, Solange Days, those precious words again. Solange died Sunday of complications from the H1N1 virus.
“It still seems like it’s not really true. The thought that I’ll never be able to see her again,”says Jones.
She says Solange was an energetic child. But two months ago, she noticed some unusual behavior.
“All she was doing was sleeping,”says Jones. Solange was admitted to a hospital. “They said that she had the regular flu,”says Jones.
Further tests confirmed the two-year-old had H1N1. “I was kind of worried because of hearing about so many people that have the virus,”says Jones.
If anyone could beat the virus, she says it would be Solange. She was born three months premature and had to spend her first months in the hospital.
“She was put on oxygen because her lungs were not fully developed,”says Jones.
She says her daughter was diagnosed with chronic lung disease and hypertension. But had learned to live with it, giving her optimism that she could beat this too.
But Solange lost her fight. Her mom blames herself. “It’s very hard to know that there’s something out there that you just can’t protect your kids from,”says Jones.
Through family, friends and prayer, she says she’ll get through this difficult time. “Just knowing that Solange is not struggling. She’s not in pain or anything anymore,”says Jones.
Jones says she wants parents to be aware of their children, especially if they have a history of health problems and to get them vaccinated.
Visitation is Friday from 3 to 9 pm at J.P. Holley Funeral Home on Garners Ferry Road. The funeral is set for 1 pm Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church on Lower Richland Boulevard.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico Department of Health said a 27-year-old Dona Ana County female with no chronic medical conditions died this last week due to the H1N1 virus. It’s the county’s first swine flu death and as of today there have been 731 hospitalizations in New Mexico, with 74 of them in Dona Ana County, the second most for the entire state.
In some cases we’re going to see deaths in people that are otherwise healthy who don’t have chronic medical conditions which is why it’s always important to get vaccinated, said Chris Minnick of the New Mexico Department of Health.
Minnick said there are still no public mass vaccinations clinics scheduled in Dona Ana County, so private practitioners are still the only ones providing the H1N1 vaccine as of right now.

I am pretty happy to have had the pig flu now. May save my life from a nastier version.
I'm concerned about the re-infections that have already occurred in subsequent waves of h1n1. Immunity is not guaranteed.
This is really bad. I have never heard of 3 flu strains hitting one place at the same time! Reassortment of the these strains with each other could result in a pathogen that even those who have had 2009 H1N1 will not be immune too.
>> I hope you are doing good :)
You as well.
Like many others, we’re managing the coughing, sniffles, and fevers carefully.
Its weird, too, because Monday, I thought I was sore from cleaning my gutters. Which was silly, really, since I'm in shape. Little did I know. Today, just doing a simple thing like taking garbage out, I was winded and tired. Any physical activity makes me nauseous.
My friend got sick the exact same time I did. We attended a volleyball tourney on Saturday and presented symptoms last night.
I will say, this isn't even remotely as bad as the Asian Flu I had in 1991. Worst case of the flu ever. I was sick for a month.
I agree.
Hey, wouldn’t it be fun to be in the Ukraine right now with President Nasty Wackadoodle in charge of panic central?
Could be the dire circumstances in the Ukraine are not as dire as being portrayed by the power structure there. It could be that people are dying because the politicans have failed to carry on a health care system after the Soviet Union collapsed. Seems President wackadoole is in major scapegoating mode.
Crap! How do I protect my cat since I have it? She’s a senior and already has underlying health issues.
I hope your kitty will be OK. I hope you are too. I was slammed with that cr@p shortly after returning from overseas in early October and it lasted for three weeks. I was weak and exhausted at the end of it.
I'm finally over it and now grateful that I had it. Those in the know are saying that you can't get it again, regardless the exposure level.
Take care and I hope the kitty stays healthy.
Help? You’re doing the work, I’m a small insect.
The president said all that, not BeWell... ;-)
Niman commented that the Pres of Ukraine is totally wrong about different kinds of flus, and that it is clear that all the flu like illness happening in Ukraine, and indeed, all over the northern hemisphere, is swine H1N1 and not various kinds of flu as stated. Other than a bit of H3N2 (I think I got it right) in Hong Kong, it’s *all* swine H1N1.
Could be wrong translation, misinformation, who knows. Many knowledgeable people state that there are many strains of swine H1N1, and I am sure that is so. Maybe he meant that; or it seems like different varieties of flu since swine can present differently. But whatever is going on in Ukraine sounds like hell.
