Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.

"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''

Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

You all decide, okay, and just please let me know. It is important to have Jane Burgermeister's information on whatever thread it is. I have downloaded her Documents, and the "Evidence" document will make you cry because it is compelling and heart-wrenching.Scroll down to the June 24, 2009 Entry Date to Download

I vote to keep this thread.

DVD Mom has a good eye for editing and is not repetitious.

I feel a little funny about voting. It would be expected that I’d vote to keep the thread I posted, I suppose.

But considering all the work DVDMom has put into it so far, it really would make the most sense.

Do you think that the title should be changed though?

I’ll ask the mods to do that tomorrow if you think so.

Good idea to change the title to something like “Latest H1N1 News”.

That about says it all. Anyone looking for the latest will know that that’s the thread they want.

Admin Mod, Please read the last few posts of this thread discussing having this be a clearinghouse thread for the latest updates on H1N1/swine flu.

Could you please change the title to what Palladin suggested retitling this as “Latest H1N1 News”?

That way, we can keep up on what’s going on without starting a new thread each time something comes up and it will be easier for people to identify the thread.

The current thread title is about a specific case that’s some weeks old already and it’s not really obvious all the work that DVD Mom did and all the updates and links that she’s already put in.

I also requested a title change for the thread through the abuse button. The mods have said before that they don’t always catch the pings and that an abuse report is more sure to catch their attention.

The nice thing about this thread, is that it’s been following the development of the situation worldwide as it’s been happening. It’ll make for a good historical reference, too.

It will be interesting to read this again in 6 mos to a year after we’ve seen what happens with the swine flu. Whether it ravages the country or is a bust.

I think it’s a good idea to change the Title, hopefully it will persuade us all to concentrate this issue into this, or a few threads with relative info, saves dupes on the forum too.

That’s my vote.

Will H1N1 Be an Asian Market Killer?

by: Cam Hui August 03, 2009
http://seekingalpha.com/article/153238-will-h1n1-be-an-asian-market-killer

Remember SARS? SARS took 2-3% off GDP Asian growth. I don’t know how serious this outbreak of H1N1 swine flu is, but there are indications that Asia is under-reporting the incidence of swine flu.

Damjan DeNoble, who produced the table below, wrote that “reported cases of H1N1 as a percentage of their populations correlate almost exactly with the corruption ranking of each country relative to its neighbors.” In other words, the heavier the level of corruption (I am shocked! shocked I say! that is corruption in China), the more likely it is that they are hiding or under-reporting swine flu cases:

Incidence of Swine Flu by country [chart at link]

[snip]

Studying the table above, some questions pop to mind:

How does Hong Kong, which has 0.5% of the population of China, have more reported cases of swine flu than China?

If China actually experiences 190K cases (a conservative estimate), would the markets panic?

As the winter flu season approaches, this could mean trouble.

55 swine flu cases confirmed in Russia

03.08.2009, 11.03
http://www.itar-tass.com/eng/level2.html?NewsID=14200521&PageNum=0

MOSCOW, August 3 (Itar-Tass) - There are 55 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in Russia, the head of the country’s consumer rights’ watchdog, Gennady Onishchenko, told a news conference on Monday.

“At present, there are 55 cases of H1N1 flu, including those laboratory-confirmed, on the territory of Russia. Several others are suspected,” he said.

Swine flu cases continue to rise in Britain, Spain, Turkey and Bulgaria.

“Practically all countries which Russian citizens like to visit register H1N1 flu cases,” Onishchenko said.

Israel:

Health Ministry: About 700 people will die from swine flu in winter

Published: 08.03.09, 11:18 / Israel News
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3756173,00.html

The Ministry of Health estimates that the expected outbreak of swine flu over the winter will claim the lives of some 700 people, most of them young people.

Health Ministry Director General Prof. Avi Yisraeli said in a discussion in the Knesset health committee on acquiring vaccinations against the illness that apparently one quarter of the population in Israel will contract the virus. According to him, there will be a shortage of some 4,500 beds in hospitals. (Meital Yasur-Beit Or)

Israel:

H1N1 Claims Another Victim, Health Ministry Predicts More

by Malkah Fleisher
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/132700

(IsraelNN.com) Just a week after swine flu claimed its first Israeli citizen, a 24-year-old Arab woman became the second fatality in Israel from the disease. Health officials told the AFP news service that more than 1,700 people in Israel are currently infected with the H1N1 virus.

Jihan Assad Mussa, a resident of Tarshiha, died Saturday night from the virus. She was described as being chronically overweight and having been hospitalized just days earlier with pneumonia in Nahariya.

Israel’s first swine flu victim, 35 year-old Eilat resident Shimon Ezran, was also overweight, and was a habitual smoker.

Another man, a 44-year-old Tel Aviv resident, died Friday night after having already recovered from the flu at Ichilov Hospital. Hospital officials stressed that he did not die from the disease, but rather from a bacterial infection. The man was listed with several risk factors.

Yet another man, 34, remains in critical condition at Ichilov, his pulmonary function severely compromised as a result of his H1N1 infection.

Health Ministry Director General Professor Avi Yisraeli issued an alarming prediction Sunday that 700 Israelis would die of the illness, either as a direct result or from complications that followed. At the Knesset Health Committee meeting, Yisraeli warned that most of the victims could be children.

There are currently more than 1,700 known cases of swine flu in Israel, with authorities estimating that up to a quarter of the population – 1.85 million people – could be infected before the virus is quelled. However, the Health Ministry urged citizens to understand that the overwhelming majority of cases would not cause long-term problems.

Last Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman to purchase H1N1 vaccines for every member of Israel’s population – 7.5 million people – at a cost of NIS 450 million.

Israel will also institute a swine flu hotline to answer questions posed by the public. The hotline will operate on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. The numbers to call are as follows:

Jerusalem area: 02- 5314847
Tel Aviv area: 03-5684655
Haifa area: 04-8632995
Northern area: 1-800-301-333
Central area: 08-9788669
Ashkelon area: 08-6745317
Southern area: 08-6263544

More than 130,000 people worldwide have contracted swine flu since the global pandemic began, and more than 800 people have died as a result. In the Middle East, less than 10 have died: two in Israel, four in Saudi Arabia, one in Lebanon and one in Qatar.

Israel’s first case of swine flu, contracted by Moshav Geulim resident Tomer Vajim, was diagnosed in April shortly after the first outbreak in Mexico. Since then, 22 serious cases of the disease have been recorded in Israel, with 11 patients fighting for their lives in intensive care hospital units.

A recent United States study suggests pregnant women are at increased risk, with the World Health Organization (WHO) instructing health officials worldwide to administer the anti-viral medication Tamiflu to all women who present with respiratory problems within 48 hours of acquiring flu symptoms.

First evidence of Relenza-resistant flu

3 August 2009
by Jared Reed
http://www.6minutes.com.au/articles/z1/view.asp?id=492811

Australian researchers have reported what they say is the first evidence of resistance to zanamivir (Relenza) in seasonal influenza A (H1N1) strains.

Writing in the Journal of Virology, researchers from the Melbourne-based WHO Collaborating Centre for Influenza say their analysis of 391 samples of H1N1 influenza virus from the region found that nine (2.3%) had a markedly reduced zanamivir susceptibility.

The H1N1 samples were collected from patients who were not being treated with the drug, and the resistance appeared to be conferred by a previously undescribed neuraminidase mutation known as Q136K. The mutation was unique to zanamivir and would not confer resistance to oseltamvir, they write.

They note that there have been many reports of oseltamivir-resistant seasonal A (H1N1) viruses but until now there have been none relating to zanamivir.

“The recent spread of oseltamivir-resistant A(H1N1) viruses ... has shown that neuraminidase resistant viruses can spread rapidly and circulate widely in the global community,” they warn.

And given that the neuraminidase resistance mutations have no apparent impact on viral fitness, “there is concern that one or both of the mutations may occur in highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses thereby reducing the effectiveness of neuraminidase inhibitor treatment of infected patients,” they say.

“Both oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) have been stockpiled by many countries worldwide for use in the event of an influenza pandemic. It is therefore essential that the neuraminidase inhibitor sensitivity of A(H5N1) avian influenza viruses is constantly monitored so that the potential effectiveness of available treatments is known,” they conclude.

Towards the end of the school year our superintendent directed all teachers to have at least two weeks worth of classroom instruction to be put on the school web site in case of an outbreak of H1N1 flu.
