Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

CANADA: Manitoba chief wants to lock down community against swine flu

No one in Canada will be left out when the H1N1 flu vaccine is ready, according to Dr. David Butler-Jones
A new case of the H1N1 virus in Manitoba has prompted the chief of a nearby First Nations reserve to prepare plans to isolate the community until its members can be vaccinated.
Chief Ken Chalmers of the Birdtail Sioux First Nation said he wants to isolate the community of 600 residents from the rest of the province, adding he’s fearful of the havoc the virus could cause if it gets established.
“We know we’re going to get some (H1N1) cases in our community but our plan is to do preventative work,” Chalmers said.
Chalmers said the plan involves advising against travel in and out of the reserve and stockpiling enough food and medication until the entire community can be treated with the H1N1 vaccine.
Birdtail Sioux First Nation is located about 20 kilometres east of the Saskatchewan border, 300 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
Chalmers said a band member who lives in nearby Birtle was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus in the middle of August. The patient, a young man of 21 or 22 years of age, disobeyed his doctor’s orders to refrain from travelling and went back to the reserve.
“It was a mild case. He spent some time with his family here on the reserve, against his doctor’s orders,” Chalmers said. The family was isolated for seven days and there was no sign the virus had spread, he said.
Chalmers said there are 21 pregnant women in the community and 140 school-age children. Chalmers said he’s also considering closing the community school.
“We know the virus will spread quickly throughout the community if it gets into the school,” Chalmers said. “I don’t know why the school opened. We’re rolling the dice with our children.”
Manitoba Health said there have been 36 new cases of H1N1 since the middle of July, and 21 of them confirmed for the month of August.
However, a spokeswoman said Manitoba would not confirm that one of those cases occurred in Birtle.
Chalmers said he doesn’t believe that the H1N1 vaccine will be readily available until December, adding his community wants to protect itself in the meantime.

NEW JERSEY: Councilman urges residents to ask questions about H1N1

Like many in society who still have concerns and fears pertaining to the Novel H1N1 Influenza virus, a.k.a swine flu, Councilman Richard Carson is worried as well.
To increase not only his knowledge, but those in Vernon, Carson set out and spoke to a number of infectious disease specialists, in hopes to further educate the residents of key facts pertaining to a possible upcoming return of the virus.
Carson stated that “the bottom line is, as citizens, we need to be aware of the swine flu, how it is progressing, and the facts about treatments and vaccines.”
According to Carson, the specialists think that the H1N1 virus will return to the states as early as October, much early than the seasonal flu. He also stated that the earlier H1N1 virus has mutated and is now a “cousin” of the original. “Meaning…vaccines just may not work,” he added.
Carson said that through all his research, he has found absolutely no medical authority that can say in confidence what this (swine flu) will do to society, how many individuals it will attack, or if the vaccine will have any affect at all.
Another concern of Carson’s is what is not known about the long-term effect of the vaccine. Carson added that “the medical research profession is basically split 50/50 on whether it is safe, or if it potentially would cause long-term medical issues.”
Though the vaccine is still being considered “relatively safe”, said Carson, he urges everyone to just “do your homework and ask questions.”
Carson concluded with reminding the public that there is no cure for swine flu. Though there are some venues to limit the duration of the symptoms, such as Tamiflu, “prevention is key,” he stated.
According to the State of New Jersey Department of Health, people must take everyday actions to stay healthy, including covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, washing hands often with soap and water, using an alcohol-based hand cleanser, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Corinna Richie was the second person from the north whose death was connected to the virus this week.

SAN ANTONIO — The H1N1 virus is definitely in San Antonio and gaining momentum.
Dr. Fernando Guerra of Metro Health said more and more people are showing up at emergency rooms with flu-like symptoms.
“They tell us maybe 30 to 40 percent of the visits to the emergency department are related to influenza-like illness,” Dr. Guerra told News 4 WOAI.

TXRedJill - 9/19/2009 9:05 AM 0 Votes Report User kao228, my daughter was sent home yesterday with a temp. of 103.4 (and all the other symptoms of the flu) and all the doctor wanted to do was a strep test. Having been in the medical/pharmaceutical fields for over 10 years, I “knew” to ask for a flu test. Guess what? The strep test came back negative and the flu test came back positive. I asked if it was type A or type B. It was type A, which is what the swine flu is. I asked that it be sent off to the CDC for confirmation and they gave me some excuse as to why my insurance might not cover it AND the doctor told me that 90% of the flu cases in South Texas right now are H1N1, so I told them I wanted Tamiflu for my entire household. If I were an average mom without medical knowledge, my daughter would have been sent out of there with NOTHING and very well could have ended up dead. I will not be giving my daughter the vaccine, but I will have to take it due to my “underlying” conditions, which increase my risk of death from H1N1. People, don’t EVER be afraid to question the medical establishment. If you don’t get an answer you are comfortable with, then go looking elsewhere. I totally agree with you Tiggerbearsmom about the lack of testing, but in my case, the benefits do outweigh the risks. On the other hand, it just came to my mind, that I might go and have my blood tested after my daughter recovers and see if I have the antibodies and save myself the risk of the vaccine. ti6718, it is not paranoia. It is “unknown” and until it is figured out, everyone needs to stay educated and that means getting information from more than one source. I would stay away from MSM. Vitamins are not going to protect you and that my friend is a fact. This flu is attacking otherwise “healthy” adults between 25 and 40. No offense, but it sounds like you need some H1N1 education.

The official death toll from swine influenza in Venezuela rose Friday to 55, out of a total of 1,103 diagnosed cases of the illness in the country so far. Announcing the figure, Health Minister Carlos Rotondaro revealed that there had been three deaths since Monday this week, including a 22-year-old woman who was pregnant.
Rotondaro repeated his earlier plea for people who thought they had been infected with the disease to seek medical treatment as quickly as possible. The majority of deaths had been of people who had not done so, he claimed.
The figures lent weight to warnings from the medical profession that the number of cases of swine influenza appeared to be accelerating in Venezuela, in contrast with cautious hope at the World Health Organization that the worst might be passed in overall global terms.
The Network of Scientific Societies (RSS), a non-government organization, said that the “lethality” inflicted by the virus that causes swine influenza, H1N1, had jumped by 344 percent in Venezuela between July and August this year.
Oswaldo Godoy, an epidemiologist at the Hospital Vargas in Caracas, said that of every hundred people who had been infected in Venezuela, five had died on average. This, he claimed, was twice the comparable figure average in Canada, he claimed.
“The great question is what’s happening, why is such a high a lethality rate occurring in Venezuela?” Godoy asked out loud. For Ana Carvajal, a doctor who specialises in infection, the answer was that “when the government says the virus is under control, the people stop giving it due importance.”
The RSS urged Rotondaro and his ministry to work for the common good and in partnership with the medical profession to combat the advance of the spreading disease. There had been serious outbreaks of swine influenza in several states, not least Miranda and Bolívar. Unofficial estimates are that more than 300 cases have been recorded in Greater Caracas.
“The government has to tell people this isn’t an illness,” Carvajal said. “This is a pandemic that’s in all countries.”
The government has said it will spend $25 million to purchase five million doses of vaccine against the disease, saying this will be free and available to all those who wish to be inoculated. Venezuela’s population is estimated to number about 28 million people.
Medical observers have expressed debts about the effectiveness of the vaccines in question. The first death from swine influenza in Venezuela was that of a 22-year-old man on April 28 this year, only days after he had returned from Panama.
