Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

It’s amazing how the body can heal itself if the organs are given the chance to rest.
I’ve heard the same thing about the heart when attacked by viruses, if the patient is put on a heart machine to pump the blood, the heart heals itself.
These new developments are very encouraging and hopefully will be tried elsewhere. They could also be considered for other illnesses, outside of the swine flu.

I remember reading about a link between gamma globulin received during pregnancy and allergies in the child. If true, pregnant women should consider it before getting a gamma globulin shot. Anyone know more about this?

H1N1 Possibly The Cause For Claiming The Life Of Lawrenceburg Woman
A week-long bout with the H1N1 (swine flu) virus may have proved fatal for a Lawrenceburg woman Wednesday.
Mitizi Ratliff Littrell, 33, succumbed to the sickness according to family members while a patient at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Family members indicate that Littrell, wife of Baptist Minister Chris Littrell, mother of two, and Teaching Assistant in the Computer Lab at Ingram Sowell Elementary School, became ill last week. While doctors had at first believed her illness to be the result of a sinus-related problem, she was hospitalized Friday after passing out. Littrell was summarily transported to Nashville for more advanced treatment.
Doctors chemically induced a coma and implemented experimental treatments, however they were unable to cure her of the suspected illness.
Final results should be in by the end of the week.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Oklahoma records second swine flu death, 20 hospitalized with flu symptoms in past week

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Health officials say a second Oklahoman has died after contracting swine flu.
In addition to the illness, the Carter County man had underlying medical conditions as did an earlier Oklahoma swine flu patient who died.
The state Department of Health said Thursday that the virus appears widespread in the state.
In the past week, 20 people have been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Cline said most people have little or no immunity to this flu strain and the illness may be severe for some.
Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Health officials say those with flu-like symptoms should not go to work or school, where others might become infected.

Former Kansas state trooper Greg Evensen came out with this shocking claim last week.:“States are planning massive roadblocks to stop all travelers for a vaccine bracelet (stainless steel band with a micro-chip on board) that will force you to take the shot. In some areas, officials may impound vehicles and force people who have not taken the vaccine onto transport to detention camps.
” Evensen wrote an artcle on July 29.
“Refuse it? You will be placed on a prison bus and taken to a quarantine camp. What will you do when your children are NOT allowed into school without the shot? What will you do when you are not allowed into the workplace without the vaccine paperwork? Buy groceries? Go to the bank? Shop anywhere?? Get on a plane, bus or train? Use the toilet in the mall? Nope. Police officers will become loathed, feared, despised and remembered for their ‘official’ duties.”
There won’t be enough space in these camps for the number of people who will refuse something like this.
So they’ll keep kids out of school? Homeschool them.
Shopping a problem? Stock up now.
Banking? Take out the money now.
Work? Work online from home, if possible.
People managed before. They’ll manage again.

Anderson County schools will be closed the rest of this week because of a high number of influenza cases, officials say.
All county schools will be closed today and Friday, according to school system spokeswoman Karen Bridgeman. They hope to reopen Monday.
The system had a 13 percent overall absentee rate on Wednesday, she said. Clinton Middle School had a 20 percent absentee rate; Clinton High School had an 18 percent absentee rate.
The above comments describe the closing of another school district in Tennessee. Absenteeism has been high (see map) in and around Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis and other schools or districts have closed in the past few weeks. Closures in Texas (see map) are also being announced as pandemic H1N1 continues to spread into regions where schools have started the new school year.
Many of these school districts describe additional absences by students with strep throat, colds, or stomach flu, but the vast majority of the other diseases are likely additional examples of pandemic influenza because 50% of flu infections do not produce a fever. Consequently, flu without fever is misdiagnosed, and frequently the infected students remain in school. Moreover, others who initially had a fever may return to school while still infectious, because viral shedding may continue for 1-2 weeks.
These school outbreaks have also been associated with a spike in student deaths, as well as healthcare workers in Tennessee. Although the majority of cases are mild, many students or young adults develop fatal infections that lead to rapid death. These reports are expected to increase as the H1N1 spreads to districts that have recently begun the new school year.

HOUSTON – Alief Montessori School was the first in Houston to close because of swine flu this year. There was one confirmed case at the school, and some suspected cases. The school principal issued a statement saying she made the decision in order to disinfect classrooms.
Houston Doctor Norris Payne is a pediatrician who believes what happened at Alief Montessori is just the beginning.
“I think that it’s the first of many, and I think it’s possible within two months that most schools will be closed,” he said.
Dr. Payne said that he’s seeing a rapid rise in swine flu cases. Over the summer, he saw five patients a day, and now he’s treating 20 kids a day, he said.
“Kids were not really sick but now one out of five kids are,” said Dr. Payne. “(They have) high fever, lethargy, they can’t walk they have to be carried in.”
At the end of last school year, concern about swine flu closed Travis Elementary.
HISD says it won’t do that again at any school, unless absences of students and staff are extreme, and the health department recommends closing.
Better that they get it over with now, before winter sets in. The more people who have it before it mutates, if it ever does, the better.
They will be immune and that will help cut down transmission.
Maybe this will burn itself out before it gets the chance to be a real problem.

Level II gives State agencies greater flexibility in permitting employees to telecommute, to follow more relaxed return to work standards, and to access the Advanced Sick Leave Bank.

CSU Has Spike in Swine Flu Cases on Campus

Colorado State University is dealing with a spike in swine flu cases that has school officials urging students with symptoms to stay home.
CSU’s health center verified 45 swine flu cases on Wednesday alone. More than 500 people with flu symptoms visited the health center that day, and officials say there could be more than 200 cases of swine flu on campus.
The university is telling students with flu symptoms not to attend class or go to the health center except in case of emergency. It wants to limit spreading the illness.
Swine flu reports at the University of Colorado in Boulder have tapered off at 100. CU has reported about 370 cases of flu-like symptoms since Aug. 1.
The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley says it has had a few confirmed swine flu cases.
No student should go to the health center in an emergency in any case. They'd be better off calling 911 or going to the local ER or urgent care clinic.
University health centers are notoriously inept.
