Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.

"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''

Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Orange Co. Schools Await H1N1 Vaccine
Several Students Treated For Flu-Like Symptoms

POSTED: 3:32 pm EDT August 27, 2009
UPDATED: 5:06 pm EDT August 27, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. — Five more students at area schools have been identified as experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Those Orange County schools are Odyssey Middle School, Maitland Middle School, Dover Shores Elementary and Pershing Elementary.

This comes just after a dozen Orange County school students are already being treated as though they have swine flu, or the H1N1 virus.

Nurses and other assistants first discovered that several students were experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Orange County nurses and other administrators found 12 students at nearly dozen schools with flu like symptoms.

They’re now being treated for swine flu.

“Of the 12 one of those students of the 12 the parent called in they did not go to school that day. Eleven did present flu like symptoms. Schools took the exact appropriate action as they’ve been trained and directed to do,” OCPS COO Michael Eugene said.

Eugene said the school has put together a comprehensive preventative approach to swine flu, which includes wiping down high touch areas.

Meanwhile, Orange County Health officials are working with the schools to get ready to administer the H1NI vaccine when it’s ready. That could be around mid-October or early November.

Timing depends on clinical trials and the manufacturing.

“The way I understand it right now, the health departments will be providing the vaccine for free. It is actually being provided through the federal government for free. Now private doctors, there is talk they could charge an administrative fee, small fee maybe $10 to $15, something like that. That’s all still in the works,” Dain Weister of the Orange County Health Department said.

At least 80 students at Texas college fall ill with flu-like symptoms: report

2009-08-28 05:40:27 Print

HOUSTON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — At least 80 students at a college in the U.S. state of Texas have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms at the start of the school year and health officials believe some of the cases could be H1N1, a local TV station reported on Thursday.

Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, Texas posted a statement on Monday on its website saying at least 10 students were sick with the H1N1 virus, but Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT reported on Thursday that the number of students infected with the H1N1 virus has nearly tripled in the past two days.

Though the campus has not been closed and no classes have been canceled, the university has been taking numerous precautions to prevent the virus from spreading, the station said.

Schools and public health officials across the country have been preparing for the new flu season, fearful that the novel strain will take off when students return to school and flu season begins.

Colleges have seen rises in the number of students with suspected cases of H1N1 flu in the past one or two weeks, according to media reports.

Georgia Tech in Atlanta reportedly has had 150 suspected cases of H1N1 flu in the past two weeks. About 200 students at the University of Kansas have reported flu-like symptoms, and the University of Alabama had more than 50 cases of flu reported on the first day of classes last week.

Flu a real issue with area high school football programs - New Orleans

Share | Written by Ken Trahan Thursday, 27 August 2009 02:27PM

Ken Trahan’s Blog

NEW ORLEANS - Over the past three days, I have been contacting area high school football coaches about whether or not their teams have been affected (or infected) with flu problems and/or the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as the Swine Flu.

While some schools have been fortunate to avoid the flu bug, an alarming number of schools have been radically affected by flu, some at near epidemic proportions.

At Holy Cross High School, the Tigers are enjoying brand new facilities and a re-birth in Gentilly. That enthusiasm has been tempered a bit by an influx of flu symptoms with members of the football team.

“We have had 25 of 63 kids with flu-like symptoms over the past week or two. It has been simply amazing,” said Holy Cross Head Coach Barry Wilson. “Of that number, three have been confirmed as testing positive for the Swine Flu.” Holy Cross is set to face Mandeville in the Covington Jamboree Friday. Mandeville reports a few players with flu-like symptoms but nothing serious.

At Hahnville, head football coach Lou Valdin’s team has had serious problems as well. “We had 18 kids out earlier this week though it was down to 10 by Wednesday afternoon,” said Valdin. “It looks like we are improving, anyway.”

Slidell High school’s football team has bee hit hard, according to Head Coach Artie Liuzza. “We have had up to 20 kids out most recently with flu-like symptoms. We just have to let it run its course and try to prevent anything else,” said Liuzza.

Varnado coach Paul Meyerchick says that his team has had as many as ten players affected and that it has hampered the team’s preparation for the season. “It hasn’t been easy,” said Meyerchick.

Franklinton has had up to 20 football players sick in recent days. At Chalmette, Jason Tucker’s Owls had dealt with as many as ten players out though most are returning now.

Ellender coach Tawaskie Anderson says that he has at least three of his players affected.

De La Salle coach Corey Bordelon says that he has a few kids out with flu symptoms but that all should be back rather quickly.

Riverdale coach Stuart Bott said that he also has three kids that have been impacted by flu-like symptoms.

Northshore coach Mike Bourg had four players out earlier this week but is not overly concerned.

Salmen has had five or six players who have been impacted. West Jefferson coach Marcus Scott says that he has had three of his players miss time with flu issues.

Rummel coach Jay Roth reports that his program has been missing “five or six players weekly for a few weeks now.” Roth also stated that one Raider player was confirmed to have tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

At St. James, Rick Gaille says that while there is more illness than usual, there is nothing serious—to this point.

Vandebilt Catholic coach Laury Dupont says that the flu is a problem. “Our quarterback, linebacker and tailback have all tested positive,” he said.

At St. Michael in Baton Rouge, Coach Eric Held reports that two of his players have tested positive for the Swine Flu while four others have flu-like symptoms.

Bonnabel Coach Craig Lingle reports two or three minor cases by that most of his players are fine.

St. Augustine Coach David Johnson tells Neworleans.com Sports that he has “one or two sick. We are fumigating everything now, taking every action we can to prevent anything from spreading,” said Johnson.

Riverside Head Coach Mickey Roussel says that there is nothing serious with his team but that they are taking “every precaution possible.”

McDonogh 35 has had cases of flu for the past couple of weeks. The same is true of Woodlawn of Baton Rouge. Of course, the most radical case is at Central High in Baton Rouge, where published reports have spoken of a major problem with the football team and throughout the school.

Thibodaux coach Dennis Lorio says that his school has had it tough. “We have a problem throughout the school with the flu. Five or six kids have missed time with our football program this week,” said Lorio.

Among other schools reporting no real problems are Higgins, Karr, Brother Martin, Shaw, Destrehan, Newman, John Curtis, Belle Chasse, St. Martin’s, St. Charles Catholic and Ridgewood.

At Jesuit, Coach Wayde Keiser says that at various times, “anywhere from six to seven players have been stricken with flu-like symptoms. Dr. Jim Tebbe, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Ochsner Kenner and a team doctor for the Jesuit football program says that while the flu outbreak must be taken seriously that the publicity surrounding the H1NI scare is a bit much.

“I think a lot of this is possibly over-hyped. It probably is H1N1 that many of the kids have but we don’t treat it any differently. We’re not even testing out patients anymore. We’re just treating it as Influenza A. For most, it really doesn’t matter what strain it is, we will still treat it with Tamiflu or Relenza. I see a lot of patients being treated who, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) guidelines, should not be treated. For some reason, we’ve seen a huge summer spike. It seems to have an affinity for young people. It’s not even flu season yet—that would typically be strongest in January for us,” said Dr. Tebbe.

As an example of schools taking precautions and voicing their concerns to parents and students is a letter sent from Rummel Principal Tommy Moran.

Dallas County Reports First H1N1 Flu Death

Track The H1N1, Or Swine Flu, Virus: CDC | WHO
CBS News Interactive: H1N1 Virus

A 52-year-old Dallas woman has died of H1N1, also known as Swine Flu.

The woman is the first confirmed H1N1 death in Dallas County.

Health officials said Thursday the woman had other pre-existing conditions, which made it more difficult to recover once she contracted H1N1. Health officials would not give specifics on the woman’s pre-existing conditions.

The woman died August 21st and test results now confirm H1N1 was the cause of death.

In Fort Worth, at least 80 Texas Christian University students have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms, and health officials believe some of the cases could be H1N1.

The university is following new Centers for Disease Control guidelines. The campus is not being closed and no classes have been canceled, but TCU is taking numerous precautions to prevent spread of the virus.

Vicksburg 15-Year-Old Dies In Clinic Waiting Room (Mississippi)

Autopsy To Be Performed On Warren Central H.S. Student
POSTED: 2:49 pm CDT August 27, 2009
UPDATED: 3:10 pm CDT August 27, 2009

Vicksburg, Miss. — A 15-year-old Warren Central High School student died Thursday while waiting to see a physician, the Warren County coroner said.

Wesley Husband, of Vicksburg, was in the waiting room of The Street Clinic, at 104 Mcauley Drive, at about 9:30 a.m. when he died, Coroner Doug Huskey said.

Husband had been out of class since last Friday and had been suffering from flu-like systems, Huskey said. Husband had already seen a doctor once and was waiting Thursday to see a second doctor, Huskey said.

Huskey said Husband’s body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy and results are expected late Thursday.

Husband was a ninth grade student at Warren Central High School.

This is the second death in a week for the Vicksburg Warren School District.

On Sunday, 6-year-old Vshanti Washington died from bacterial meningitis. She was a first grade student at Dana Road Elementary School.

We’ll have more information on 16 WAPT News at 4, 5, 6, and 10 with live reports.

My niece in Orlando sent me an email today reporting the death of a personal friend there. Suspected H1N1.

He was a 63 year old man, very fit and healthy. He got sick with flu symptoms and was hospitalized. He was dead in one week.

Cultures sent to the State Laboratory in Florida were NEGATIVE. However, they were not sent in immediately, but after 4 days of Tamiflu treatment.

His condition continued to deteriorate. Docs are 99% sure it was swine flu.

They explained to his wife that a “pneumonia plug” formed in the lower lobe of his lung. This caused deprivation of oxygen and then a heart attack.

It seems the body tries to fight the virus by shedding lung tissue. No rhyme or reason as to who develops this complication or why.

Folks in Orlando are snapping up face masks at Lowe’s and Home Depot. N-95 masks, made by 3M are the best.

Purell alcohol gel and all brands of hnd wipes are flying off the shelves.

This is no chain email, but a warning from my very trustworthy niece who is in shock over the death of this good friend.

The swine flu has many many examples & articles of people testing negative for the flu but after they die SURPRISE they test positive for the swine flu .

Below is another example of that occuring :((((

Flu Victim Family’s Statement
http://www.fox13now.com/news/kstu-utah-third-deaths-family-statement,0,4966333.story

7:40 PM MDT, June 14, 2009
Our family would like to express thanks to the Shock and Trauma unit at IMCH. And to those who have prayed and supported our family over the past 2 weeks.

Francine and her mother became ill with the flu two weeks ago today. Her mother tested positive and was treated for the flu and has since recovered. Francine tested negative and was sent home. Her health continued to decline, and three days later she was taken to Jordan Valley Hospital. For the second time she tested negative, was sent home, and told to increase fluids and rest.

We begged the doctors to treat her with Tama flu because it had helped her mother, but they refused because her test had come back negative. After another three days she became incapacitated, and was again taken to Jordan Valley where she was admitted and found to have pneumonia, plus all of the symptoms associated with the flu, but once again tested negative. At this point she had had the flu for approximately eight days, untreated. Her condition continued to decline, and on Tuesday was transferred to IMC Hospital. By this time her body was so ravaged from the virus that her kidneys and lungs started to fail and brain activity had diminished. On Wednesday, June 10 we received a positive Type-A flu test, and on Thursday we received, from the CDC, a positive test for H1N1, Swine Flu.

After fighting a valiant battle she succumbed to this illness. It has been reported that she had underlying illnesses that contributed to her death, but according to her doctors she died from lung damage, kidney failure, and brain damage which were all strong and healthy prior to contracting the virus.

Good list.

It’sa good idea to get supplies now, while they are available.

This thing is going to get a lot worse.

If you live alone, be sure to have someone to call to check on you; or to look in on you if they don’t hear from you for day or two.

If it’s like the flu I had in 1957, you’ll feel sick as a dog and won’t even have the strength to reach for the telephone.

He didn’t take the Tamiflu until he was in the hospital, a couple of days after he first felt the symptoms.

It might be good to have Tamiflu on hand, even though it is very expensive. ($120 for the entire course of treatment.)
