WASHINGTON - Metro confirms two trains have collided on the Red Line between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations. It happened close to the Fort Totten station, a Metro spokesperson said.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said one train was on top of the other train.

This is "developing into a mass casualty event," Etter said. "We're expecting a number of injuries. We're not aware of any fatalities at this point."

Odd. That part of the system is above ground and reasonably straight, so in daylight the motorman should be able to see down the line.

Let me guess, a driver was distracted because s/he was texting on a cell phone?

Something similar happened on the Boston MBTA a few months ago. A driver was texting, totally missed the red light signal and collided with another subway train.

Metro has a pretty poor safety record, and I’ve read that a lot of automated safeguards on other commuter rails aren’t in place with Metro. Oh well, I use it to get to and from DCA and for drinking purposes.

Based on the facts: one train on top of the other, this is a multiple fatality event.

If that much steel is wrecked imagine what it did to the bodies inside.
