SC: Gov. Sanford not heard from since Thursday (Updated)

UPDATE: The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford have been unknown to state officials since Thursday, and some state leaders are questioning who is in charge of the executive office.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division has been able to reach Sanford, who left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation who declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said.

One official familiar with the situation said there is no indication that foul play is involved.

. . . . .

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press her husband has been gone for several days and she doesn't know where. She said she was not concerned. Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

Just what does a Black SLED SUV look like? I scrolled for pix and didn't see a vehicle.

A coworker recently had his kids for a few days all the way from Kansas down to Texas. He drove to get them and drove them back where the mother is.

But that was before Father’s Day according to the visitation schedule.

On Father’s Day he talked to them on the phone.

There have to be a lot of similar situations out there.

Okay, "chief." You sound like a great dad. You do at least understand that I've been talking about small, right?

Father's Day and Mother's Day aren't really for the parents. (I can't believe I even have to say this.)

Do you ever look at things through a child's eye? Are you ever concerned that possibly even if they say they "don't care" if you're around like the other dads, that they really might? You do know that kids talk at school about what they do on Father's/Mother's Day?

If Governor Sanford is on critical state or national business, like I said, that would trump, of course.

No, he doesn’t work for you either, but he does work for me and I don’t have a problem with him taking some time off and not telling me where he is.

Thank you and thank you for recognizing what he has been through lately. We have far too many FReepers lately that just post to be heard yet lack reason.

Yes, rangerette. This may sound “out there,” but I contend that much of the extra traffic that's on the road on Fridays and Sundays is parents shuttling their children back and forth, parent to parent.

Cut to the chase. This gives all appearances of his political enemies on both aisles anticipating a run for the W.H. from Sanford concocting a publicity scheme to take advantage of a known absence. Blown out of proportion by everyone.

Agreed. I really like Mark Sanford and am on record as hoping like heck that he'll consider running in 2012.

That said, this was a boneheaded move. At minimum, he is in charge of the SC National Guard, and really does have a position of responsibility and trust that requires him not to do this.

It's a good experience for him though. If he's really serious about a run, they'll take things even more trivial and blow them up so he's going to have to alter his lifestyle somewhat with an eye to that in mind.

Very well put.

Never. Children don't have a good view of reality. Best to spend time training them.

Proof is in the pudding. My kids graduated, waited until they were married to have children, are self supporting, and are veterans (even if they BOTH chose the wrong branch).

Don't get me wrong. We're a very close and loving bunch. But we darn sure aren't in each others hip pockets. We'll hear from each other when we hear from each other. A week or two, even over made-up holidays isn't a worry.

he would rather resign than give in to being coerced into taking the money

There is no sense in that. Because the courts and the SC legislatures force him to take the money he should quit? How does that help SC? He serves because the majority voted him into office, he would be less of a person to quit because he didn't get his way don't you think?

You have information that the Guard can't reach him, in event of emergency?

And isn't it the other way around, actually.... The GOV decides he wants the State Guard activated?

“Could it be he is heading over to visit the troops and his itinerary is a secret?”

That sounds plausible. Is the SC National Guard deployed at present?

Thanks. The posters here don’t want to know the truth, they rather enjoy bashing our governor. I think FReepers have been taken over by DU pods.

Would you very insightful FReepers please explain what led you to these comments about the governor of my state? C'mon now, I'm sure you have some information that would lead you to think this. We FReepers are fond of intellegent debate and conversation to enhance and promote conservative thought so I'd love to hear your reasons for such ignorant comments.

You have information that the Guard can't reach him, in event of emergency?

Sanford's unannounced absence was a cause for concern because the National Guard and the state's top law enforcement agencies report to him, Land said.

SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife (^)

And isn't it the other way around, actually.... The GOV decides he wants the State Guard activated?

How is he supposed to know about potential issues while they're still small, if he hasn't told anyone where he is and has his cell phone turned off (from previous reports). Does he wait to hear about it on the news? Is he watching the news?

In my opinion, childhood is not all about "adult reality" and "training."

In my opinion, Father's/Mother's Days are really "children's days."

Father's Day is a day when a child is able to "take" their father fishing or "make" him his favorite sandwich. It's a day for a dad to at least "fake" that the child picked "dad's fave fishing hole," or "loved" his baloney and butter sandwich.

In my opinion it's an easy thing to do for a child. I think it's American tradition--and it's one that shows how we value fatherhood.
