UPDATE: The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford have been unknown to state officials since Thursday, and some state leaders are questioning who is in charge of the executive office.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division has been able to reach Sanford, who left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation who declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said.

One official familiar with the situation said there is no indication that foul play is involved.

. . . . .

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press her husband has been gone for several days and she doesn't know where. She said she was not concerned. Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

The only positive is that this would move DeMint up in the 2012 rankings.

I hope this is just a misunderstanding. I think he is one of the better governors. That being said, as governor, you cant just disappear for personal reasons without telling people. I wonder if there is more to this....

I’d not put too much emphasis on this as it seems he’s taking some time to be alone outside the normal daily routine and has made arrangements.

From post #118 above:

“The governor put in a lot of time during this last legislative session, and after the session winds down it’s not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head. Obviously, that’s going to be somewhat out of the question this time given the attention this particular absence has gotten. Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions.“

There is absolutely NO reason for this to be anything of the sort. Anyone in public office should regroup and gather their values, what they believe in, reaffirm their faith, whatever he is doing. And with the session closed, there is no reason for him not to do this. Gov.’s leave states all the time, and are never available 24/7. They are available within an hour or two, via messaging. I am surprised that so many are thinking the worst here.

This sounds like it will end with him in a hotel room standoff, naked.

No...not at all. My thoughts that were if the Governor had no way out, if he was being forced by the courts to take the stimulus money, as much as he disagreed with it and his hands were tied, that instead of giving in, he would rather resign than give in to being coerced into taking the money. Maybe I’m off base here, but I would think that THAT would be standing on prinicple.

AMEN!! a voice of reason, the man has been hounded by this administration for months, and then by his own legislature.

Some here are just so quick to think the worst and throw people under the proverbial bus!

OK. But I don’t understand why law enforcement had to track down his cell phone to try to find him. Did they have to get a warrant to get the info from the cell phone company? All I’m saying is that there are lots of unanswered questions, and I’m hoping for a really good explanation. With the little I knew about him before, I liked Mark Sanford. I hope I still will after this issue is resolved.

Miss, the press person said he was away for Fathers day. She did not. If we have learned only one thing in this past year and a half, it should be do not trust what the press writes.

Never, one more time, THEY DO KNOW. They are not telling the press. I say good for them!

If anyone called law enforcement, a good bet would say it was one of his adversaries, angered and bitter, and throwing a tantrum at not being told where he was going. So they made an issue of it. When it isn’t an issue at all.

One more time, he does not work for his office, he works for the people of the state.

A simple press release, particularly after this hit the fan would have sufficed.

Agreed about the press, gidget. So again, pardon my post if the wife did not state that her husband needed to be away from the children for any reason during Father's Day. It must be urgent state business.

I think she does, too. But the proper response is not to say you don’t know where your husband it. It’s to smile and say nothing.

That way, it looks like she knows.

The way it is now, it stays in the news for another day and everyone talks about it.
