UPDATE: The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford have been unknown to state officials since Thursday, and some state leaders are questioning who is in charge of the executive office.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division has been able to reach Sanford, who left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation who declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said.

One official familiar with the situation said there is no indication that foul play is involved.

. . . . .

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press her husband has been gone for several days and she doesn't know where. She said she was not concerned. Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

It always amazes me how quickly people come to a conclusion about something that they know NOTHING about!

For days? We don’t use steamers anymore. He probably would have flown. It’s something weird or a stunt. Or he’s an addict of some kind or mental.

I had hoped the gov. would resign

Your idea of the way to fight for your beliefs is to abandon your responsibilities?

Why so many of you feel the need to stoop to making up your own rumors about our good governor is beyond me. You all sound like the folks at DU.

According to his office, he is taking some time to recharge.

A statement from Sanford’s spokesman, Joel Sawyer, says, “Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements.”

Sawyer added, “Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions.

Sanford’s wife Jenny, told the Associated Press she hasn’t heard from him in several days — including Father’s Day. She says, “He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids.” She and the couple’s four sons are vacationing at the beach, and she says she’s not worried about her husband.

Well, shouldn’t his employers, the people of SC, be let in on the secret?

It's not us that have the concern, only the liberal presstitues. I don't mind him taking a vacation with out letting me know where he is.

Please pardon what I said if his wife was misquoted. But why be away from your children on Father’s Day if not for something either absolutely needed for his state or country?

The article states: Sanford’s last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said.

This implies that law enforcement has been trying to locate him, and his staff is just spinning when they say they are in contact with him. They don’t know where he is. His staff would have told law enforcement if they knew rather than have them track his cell phone.

I agree. The idiots on here sound like they are from DU. They believe everything the media tells them even though they are misquoting Sanford's wife and taking things out of context.

So far on this thread he's been accused of having cosmetic surgery, being in rehab, sleeping with someone male or female, and abandoning his children and of course we can't ignore the anti-southern remarks. WTF? They are as bad as DU and why we have lost so many good people who stopped showing up here. There used to be more adults on board. What ever happened to the folks at FR that used to know better?

His wife and kids were vacationing at the beach and he needed to get caught up on some work. So her and the kids took off to the beach he took off somewhere else. It’s called a working vacation.

I wrote that when there was a real concern for his health/safety. I don't care if someone goes on vacation, but it is ridiculous that his location and situation was unknown.

"It's called a working vacation."

I'm well aware of what a working vacation is.

It wasn’t unknown. His office knows where he is. Can’t you people see the press is making this a big issue, no one else is.
