I somewhat agree with you about "the street" in that government should have no say over what costume you choose to wear or not to wear in public. After all, some ultra right fundamentalist Christians would probably be offended about what Mrs. "Eye Candy" (Carla Bundi) Sarkozy (ooh-la-la) chooses to wear at the beach and that would be a shameful afront to the eye. But, in certain places, say public buildings where business is being done and could be threatened by a robber in a burka; schools, courts, etc.; I would fully back the enforcement of a dress code and I also believe employers have a legitimate right to require dress codes for employees.
The Burkah HIDES the face...therefore makes the person underneath UNIDENTIFIABLE. That would be like people going around with ski-masks or scarves over their faces.....ridiculous.
Is it a right deduction from yor post that there must be only the government which is allowed to use violence to impose moral or religious values?
I fully agree with you - my thanks for thorough explaining of this point of view.
Vive la France!
It ought to be obvious that Western societies violent coercion by individuals is and must remain illegal. Laws must be enforced and that may require force but this must be reserved to government.
You sound like a libertarian. Don’t be fooled by talk of freedom to dress a certain way. For the most part, these women are either brainwashed or forced into it.
Like Mormons are brainwashed? Like Catholics are brainwashed on issues like birth control? abortion? The freepers on this website have grown control-freakish indeed if they want to ban conservative forms of reverent dress. And please spare me, everyone, about your knowledge of muslims. I know many muslim women and they not only choose to wear it, but speak reverently about how it de-sexualizes society and honors God. Sheesh. I stop posting in FR for awhile only to come back and find advocates for banning clothing that most muslims rightfully find reverent and conservative (and that includes women). Sad.
You equate Muslims to Mormons and Catholics at your peril.
How do you suppose Islamic radicalization happens? It starts with coercion and violence against moderate muslims. Next you will be telling us that this is legitimate religious expression.
I don’t like the idea of dictating clothing choices but in this case if it helps to break the process of radicalization then I am all for it.
I miss George W. Bush!
There are seven emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah, and Fujairah.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the most frequently visited by tourists, and have the most significant expat population.
Sharjah and Ajman are the most conservative emirates.
That said, I have read hijabs are not required of female tourists in Sharjah, but that may have changed.
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah represent the vast majority of the UAE's population (80%).
Dubai even has liquor stores. Muslims cannot own or enter them, but non Muslims may purchase alcohol.
In Franceistan? Really?
