Michelle Obama is Coming to Town

She will be in San Francisco to help kick off a new White House push toward volunteerism. Mrs. Obama will deliver the keynote address to the "National Conference on Volunteering and Service" at 5 p.m.

More than 4,000 national and international volunteer and service leaders are expected for the three-day conference at the Moscone Center, but the First Lady is clearly the headline act. The visit kicks off United We Serve, a national call to community service from President Obama. Before she hits Moscone, Michelle Obama will join California's First Lady Maria Shriver to help participate in the building of a playground at San Francisco's Bret Harte Elementary School.

Both first ladies will get thier hands dirty by rolling up their sleeves and pitching in on the playground. While Mrs. Obama is in the Bay Area, dozens more White House officials are fanning out across the country to mark a new summer service initiative.

Getting the First Lady (instead of, let's say, the Secretary of Agriculture) is a score, both for the state and for Mrs. Shriver.

All this is going to do is diminish traditional volunteerism. Those who volunteer (and give to charity) on their own time and money will just shrug their shoulders now, and the people who truly need the help won’t get it.

I've always been surprised how these people can't just donate
their time and service without splashing it all over the press.

I volunteer my time because I want to. Not because I want someone to say
