Her name was Neda, which means “voice” in Farsi. According to numerous online accounts picked up by media outlets worldwide, she was shot in the streets by Iranian state police while protesting today. This is what repression looks (warning: graphic):

If by “ascerbic” you mean “asinine with a lot of insecurities and some odd preoccupations,” I agree.

a⋅cer⋅bic

1. sour or astringent in taste: Lemon juice is acerbic.
2. harsh or severe, as of temper or expression: acerbic criticism.

Yes, asinine as well, Petronski. There are, of course, other applicable words that begin with the letter a for seatrout. ;-)

Now how did that “s” get in there? Ooops.

Let’s put it to good use though. The extra “s” is for the stupidity displayed in so many of seatrout’s posts.

Why, because she was anti-Zionist? When so many members of our movement insist on putting on the kneepads for Israel, it makes me worry greatly about the future of conservatism.

I never got the memo saying we must be anti-Zionist in order to be conservatives.

What really turned the clerics of Iran against the Shah was that his regime began to educate women and granted them the right to vote. The sight of professional women walking around Tehran with uncovered heads wearing skirts and highheels was too much for the likes of the Ayatollah and his ilk.

If you’re going to mock her martyrdom, at least look at that photo while you do it.

Wow, Obama went for ice cream while some poor girl got killed in a hellhole no more civilized than Sudan or Rwanda. Guess that makes Zero a bad person for getting that cone of vanilla fudge*, huh.

Yeah, Zero’s kinda vanilla fudge himself, but I digress.

I’ve seen plenty of pictures of people killed in Third World hellholes; Sudan, Congo, Rwanda, Haiti (necklaces!). Nothing new under the sun.

Exactly. The “clerics” couldn’t stand modernity, but neither could the great bulk of the Iranian masses, or the revolt never would have gotten off the ground. The mullahs cleverly tapped into the Iranian people’s innate primitiveness.

“Peanuts” acted like a total bitch when our hostages were taken, but there wasn’t much he could have done to save the Shah. That was a bottom-up uprising against the 20th century, and the Shah was too weakenend physically (he was terminally ill) and politically to stop it. Even if Ford were still POTUS, the Shah would still lose the “Peacock Throne.”

Not noble, just realistic. The butchery that went on, and still goes on in sub-saharan Africa (no less civilized than Iran) makes the killings of the pro-Mousavi protestors look very puny in comparison. Just another day in a Third World dump—as I’ve said before.

From Obama's Democrat National Committee acceptance speech:

Change is realizing that meeting today's threats requires not just our firepower, but the power of our diplomacy—tough, direct diplomacy where the president of the United States isn't afraid to let any petty dictator know where America stands and what we stand for. We must once again have the courage and conviction to lead the free world. That is the legacy of Roosevelt, and Truman, and Kennedy. That's what the American people want. That's what change is.

Those were his words.

And as Neda died:

Let us remember Obama's deeds:

But the masses were not necessarily in favor of establishing a theocracy. The Iranian proletariat wanted socialism. The rural tillers of the soil wanted land redistribution. The urban professionals wanted a multi-party republic. However, the Iranian ulama were all things to all these disparate groups and made promises to them accordingly, but the real agenda was the establishment of a mullahcracy governed according to sharia. I doubt they could have pulled it off had they been truthful about their true intentions.

He *was*.

Nice asterisk, but we're not disputing baseball home run records here. Mousavi is about as moderate as Yasser Arafat. Taking the same path too.

The question is, has he toned it down, or is he just lusting after power for himself? Top lapdog under the Mullahs still beats also-ran or peon.

The answer is, he was once a terrorist lover and US/Israel hater, so it reasons that he he'll always be a terrorist lover and US/Israel hater. His idea of "reform" will probably give women there more rights and end stoning, but that's about it.

And that leaves unaddressed the gunning down of unarmed women in the streets: if they're having a "Death to the Great Satan!" foreign policy in any case, it is still a step forward to let the people *choose* their elected officials.

That's certainly heart-string tugging, but what can the U.S. do? We can't send troops in. We voice our support and then what do you think will happen? There will be more bloodshed and we'll look stupid because the Iranians expected us to intervene.

How will that advance U.S. interests OR the values of Freedom and Democracy?

You're worried about advancing freedom and democracy in Iran when ours are going to pot?

If the masses were frightened because women were given basic rights, then their innate primitveness made a theocracy possible. A theocracy needs fertile soil—the “soil” being a backwards-looking, superstitious populace. Even if it wasn’t precisely what the Iranian “lumpenproletariat” wanted, it was close enough for government work, as the saying goes.

"One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic"

And as Neda died:—

Yeah, as if Zero went into a “Tear down this wall” full-throttle oratory then Neda would somehow be alive.
There wasn’t a damn thing Zero, W, or, (God bless him) RR himself could have done to stop Neda’s death.

Your starting to sound like a whiny lib. Why don’t you go on TV with Sally Struthers; you’d be a big help.
