Melancon may challenge Vitter in Senate

Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) confirmed Friday that he is weighing a campaign against Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) in 2010, but he declined to confirm a report that said he was going to run.

“Many Louisianans have encouraged me to run for U.S. Senate next year,” Melancon said in a statement. “I am discussing this opportunity with my wife and kids and will be making an announcement in the coming weeks.”

LA Politics Weekly reported Thursday, citing anonymous sources, that Melancon had decided to enter the Senate race. The website is run by political analyst John Maginnis.

If Vitter had practiced what he preached, he wouldn’t be in this mess.

If they lose Vitter's seat, it could be a very bad year for the GOP in the Senate in 2010. There's already a number of very questionable states where there won't be a GOP incumbant.

Although Ensign isn't up until 2012, he's not out of the woods yet either, and a resignation isn't completely out of the question, but probably unlikely.

Vitter should be persuaded not to run to let someone less "controversial" take his place.

Melancon is the only Congressman who has not signed on to be a cosponsor of HR1207 (Federal Reserve Transparency Act). Just an FYI, I have sent emails and he will not respond.

This being LA, as I’ve said many times, they take a more “French” attitude towards indiscretions as such. Despite his behavior, I still believe Vitter is the best candidate able to hold onto the seat, and he has my support. We can’t afford to be tossing anyone in the Senate overboard at this point, especially our best voting members (unless there is a clear indication of their impending general election defeat, such as with Bunning in KY).

You’re mostly right about the French attitude. That is the case most of the time. But when the person committing the indescretion makes a career out of portraying himself as Mr. Clean, voters tend to be less indulgent. The likes of Edwin Edwards can get away with it because they never pretended to by anything else. Remember, the people of Louisiana didn’t have that attitude towards Jimmy Swaggert.

Also, many conservatives supported Vitter anyway because no credible ‘Rat had come forward. That has changed.

With news of Ensign, Larry Craig, and Vitter, I’m beginning to think the reason why GOP politicians have been acting so “off” lately, is due to them being morally compromised.

Well by all accounts I’ve seem potential primary opponent Jay Dardenne is to to the left of Vitter (by a little or a lot I don’t know).

Unless polls show Vitter can’t beat Melancon (I don’t expect this) then I figure he’s gonna be renominated.

Be nice to snag that house seat back.

If we could hold onto Cao’s seat, the LA House delegation would become all-GOP (first time since 1871). That was real boneheaded to let Billy Tauzin try to run his ill-prepared and unqualified kid. A needlessly lost seat.

The NRCC reportedly is trying to recruit State Rep. Nickie Monica to run against Melancon for his House seat, and are beginning to ramp up a campaign against him. Melancon may be taking a possible re-election fight into consideration.

Monica, BTW, represents much of St. John and St. James parishes, which are lean Dem in most elections. He’s probably one of the best candidates we can get.

Personally, I think Vitter can beat Melancon, provided he commits no gaffes and presses Melancon on his support of much of the Messiah’s agenda. The spending issue alone would hurt him.

We’ll need Melancon’s seat just to make up for the expected loss of Cao’s (barring a miracle).

I agree completely! I had an DOD/MSM personal security issue and I called Senator Vitter’s office. Although I spoke with his aide and never the Senator (he was in D.C.) he jumped all over it and lets just say I didn’t hear any more inquiries. Thank you Senator Vitter!

Are you saying Melancon is credible? In these economic times I think we could argue against that. I sent an email to the BR tea party and hopefully they will blast out an email and strategy to fight him.

Vitter has been very hands on in SWLA after the hurricaneS unlike Sinator Mary. The only pols who really gave a damn about the damage from Rita were Vitter, Boustany, and Jindal.

That is what people need to focus on. Yes he made mistakes, no we do not condone that behavior but we do have to look at who is still fighting for peoples prosperity in louisiana.
