FRANCE may introduce a law banning full burqas if a parliamentary commission finds the growing number of women wearing them have been coerced into doing so.
Nearly 60 legislators signed a proposal on Wednesday calling for a parliamentary commission to look into the spread of the burqa in France, a garment that they said amounted "to a breach of individual freedoms on our national territory".
France, home to Europe's largest Muslim minority, is strongly attached to its secular values and to gender equality, and many see the burqa, which covers the wearer from head to toe and hides her face, as an infringement of women's rights and is increasingly being imposed by fundamentalists.
The country has been divided by fierce debates about how to reconcile those principles with religious freedom.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has not yet spoken on the subject but promised to address the issue in a speech on Monday to members of parliament.

You mean like Sharia law does currently?
Islam is the religion of Muslim people. Islamic law is called "sharia."
In France, according to the law in existence already, La Loi Sur La Voile, all “ostentatious” displays of religion are forbidden in government facilities, such as schools, some businesses, Post Office, etc.
Crosses and yarmulkers are included along with the Islamic veil.
So, a woman wearing a cross, or a man wearing a yarmulker cannot be employed by the government, or attend a public school or university.
If one is to have freedom of religious expression, it must be for all.
The Dean of NYU Law School is an Orthodox Jew who wears a yarmulker. So are many doctors, and heads of departments in major medical schools and hospitals. Many women in all walks of life wear crosses. I personally wear a cross every day.
I look at it this way: in the US, with the Burka and hijab, at least we know who and where these people are . We can also judge whether there is an increase.
While theyre at it, they need to ban Islam.
And banning burkas is going to save France? LOL!
Diddo.
There seems to be a double standard or blurred vision as to what freedom is. Actually,F rance takes one more step toward secularizing society and infringing upon religion. How would we react to France banning women from wearing veil’s to mass?
This “progressive” action actually restricts the freedom of these women. I would expect that if these women are committed to wearing the burqa they would either
1)opt to protest the government’s decision by wearing the burqa in public
or
2)not leave the house
Thus, in effect, the French government is further suppressing the rights of these women.
even a fascist one?
Yes.
