Guest Column: The cost of a diverse Naval Academy
The Capital, HometownAnnapolis.com ^ | June 14, 2009 | Bruce Fleming

The Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead announced in Annapolis recently that "diversity is the number one priority" at the Naval Academy.

Advertisement The Naval Academy superintendent, Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler, echoed him. Everyone understands that "diversity" here means nonwhite skins.

Fowler insisted recently that we needed to have Annapolis graduates who "looked like" the Fleet, where enlisted people are about 42 percent nonwhite, largely African American and Hispanic.

The stunning revelation last week was that the Naval Academy had an incoming class that was "more diverse" than ever before: 35 percent minority.

Me, I just want sailors that will defend the Constitution first, the Nation second, and be very effective at killing the enemies of the same.

Not sure how color factors into that.

Some people will do anything to get that next star.

"Hispanic" is a meaningless term invented in the seventies.

Over 50% of "hispanics" consider themselves "white".

Curiously, I’ve noted that the Navy is using the word “diversity” to mean not race-based, skin-color, ethnic-type things, but diversity in engineering backgrounds or some other vague, ill-defined meanings.

I’m not sure what Roughhead and his predecessors at command level positions are getting at. Are they merely gaming the popular fascination with “diversity?” Are they true believers in leftist political fashion? Do they believe that adding female engineers and lime green engineers and pink polkadotted engineers to the lilly white male workforce somehow produces better engineering?

I do not know. But Navy command level has been placing “diversity,” whatever that means, in the top handful of stated priorities over the last several years.

Ummm

I’d like the Israeli navy to make sure the Arabs are adequately represented on their submarine crews, seems just under half of all Israeli citizens are Arabs.

Now, what was your question?

If “diversity” is the number one priority of our Navy, we are already defeated. I am sure somewhere, Russians, Chi-coms, and North Koreans are laughing hysterically at this with much anticipation and glee.

I would like Fowler to detail the horrors that will be visited upon us if only, say 32% of Annapolis graduates are nonwhite.

Cause it beats me.

As long as the academic standards are met, I couldn’t care less if the guy in the foxhole with me is white, brown, yellow or purple.

This is the post of the year.

Congratulations.

"..."diversity is the number one priority" at the Naval Academy...

What in HELL is he talking about? He needs to be demoted and retired.

"Is this another example of dumbing-down for the sake of quotas?"

It goes much deeper than that. The whole point of the nonsense visited upon our military by the Political Left, is to render the US military incapable of winning wars.

That's basically it.

....looks like the Navy is dumbing down it’s officer corps....and why not?......it’s already happened in the FBI/CIA/NSA and other govt agencies formerly known for leadership....minority hiring and promotion preferences have influenced a number of my friends to retire early from govt. service....including HUD,USDA and Treasury(secret service)

Is this another example of dumbing-down for the sake of quotas?

Every year that I served from 1964 to 1990 the line sprouted by the Admiralty was "This is the best Navy (Or these are the best sailors) we have ever had. They can't have it both ways.....either they can have the best or they can have diversity (affirmative action). The two goals are mutually exclusive.

It sure makes me glad I retired.

Obamaism in action. Barack Obama is the most egregious example of Affirmative Action that has ever been seen in the USA. Now, the USNA. Sad....and dangerous to US national security.

< Not sure how color factors into that. >

Perhaps you are missing the thrust of the article. The courts have banned the use of a two-track admission whereby less qualified minorities are selected over well-qualified whites.

That's how color factors into that. Dumbing-down for feel good quotas.

I wonder what the reaction of Hyman Rickover, father of the nuclear submarine force, would be to the dumbing down of the Naval Academy. Rickover was legendary for his rigorous adherence to merit and excellence. He might have been the most hated man in the United States Navy, but he built a fleet that kept America safe.

“I’m not sure what Roughhead and his predecessors at command level positions are getting at.”

....he hopes to be Chief of Naval Operations and after that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff....so he’s publically flashing his P.C. bona fides....Superintendant of the Naval Academy is a real plum position in the Navy and can lead to greater things.

Stonewalls, who grew up in Annapolis

I have no problem with diversity. What I do have a problem with is that most minorities are Democrats. Democrats are notoriously weak on national defense, loathe the military, and don’t believe there’s any war worth fighting (unless it’s from 30,000 feet in a fast-flying plane). So how could I trust a naval officers corps that is heavily Democrat politically?

The obvious thing for white kids to do is to claim minority blood. A great many people in this country have a drop or two of Native American blood. Many more have other “minority” relatives in their family tree. If the Navy is going the tilt the field at such an extreme angle, there must be a counter-weight.
