Seven things Sarah Palin must do now to win later
Jewish World Review ^ | June 17, 2009 | Roger Simon

Posted on 06/17/2009 5:34:12 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Sarah Palin can be the Republican nominee in 2012. I am not saying she will be, but she can be.

Those who underestimate her do so at their own risk. She projects a tough but warm personality. Her most famous line — "You know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick!" — reflects that. She is a conservative in an increasingly conservative party.

...

That someone could be Sarah Palin, if she does seven things right now:

Dump Alaska. She doesn't need to run for re-election for governor in 2010 for name recognition or to get media attention. And being a governor these days is like having a target on your back. (Republican Tim Pawlenty, who has his own plans for 2012, announced earlier this month that he will not seek election to a third term as governor of Minnesota.)

But there is a bigger reason for Palin to give up the governorship: Maybe you can see Russia from Alaska, but you can't see Iowa and New Hampshire from Alaska. Alaska is too far away from where she needs to be. She can live, skimobile and hunt moose in Alaska, but she needs to spend a lot of travel time in the lower 48 without having to run back to Juneau every week.

Surround Yourself With People Smarter Than You Are. That shouldn't be hard, her opponents will say. OK, let them laugh. They laughed at George W. Bush when he ran for president in 2000 and at Arnold Schwarzenegger when he ran for governor of California in 2003. Both benefited from low expectations and smart staffs.

Some decent suggestions,

but I’d say, above ALL else,

continue to speak from her genunine core values. This is something no leftist (or RINO) can even do, much less compete with.

Number 8: Dump the Republican party.

Personally I think she needs to make her intent to run or not run very clear very early.

don’t worry about David Letterman.

Stop winking.

and give specifics as to what is wrong with liberalism/obamaism and what you’d do to put America back on the right path. She has to point out how inept Buttcrack is.

I’d have to disagree with dumping Alaska. If she keeps giving good governance and leadership to Alaska, then it can become a great example of conservative leadership and governance.

Number 8: Dump the Republican party.

No.

She needs to lead the Republican Party. Our elected politicians aren't all bad people. They are just good followers. They'll follow orders from obama or from a patriot with equal willingness, so long as they get to stay in office. If Governor Palin leads, they will follow, and she could use their numbers on her side. Considering the damage she'll have to reverse, we need as many votes on our side as possible.

I do not agree with dumping Alaska. I do agree with the other items but you have the best solution.

Sarah needs to go out on her own and let the real conservative Republicans follow her out.

Those left behind, need to be left behind.

The OP has been moving to the socialist left for many years thanks to several party leaders. Their actions in the past and present don't indicate any change. They are not jumping on her bandwagon because of their socialist bent. Palin will not be able to constantly fight against their socialist leanings and unite the party at the same time.

i disagree with dumping Alaska. It could be used to show and contrast her governing and experiencing with Zero who has neither. I don’t agree with her running 2012 unless the economy tank so badly that we’re near the bottom, otherwise any win will be meaningless as she couldn’t do much to change it without a big majority. She also need study up on Austrian economics and listen to Peter Schiff.
My dream team is Palin and Peter Schiff

You are very correct. She is making all the right moves in Alaska and they have low taxes and low unemployment to prove it. It's a record that the others can't compare to.

She DESPERATELY needs to get to Iowa and New Hampshire...two very difficult states to win (especially New Hampshire)...remember two years ago, Hillary was a shoe in for the Democrats and that did not happen. I think Hillary took for granted Iowa at the beginning.

That might actually rate higher than a number 8 on the list.

But Palin has a chance because of what the Republican Party has become: a smaller, more conservative party that has already driven away many moderates and "soft" Republicans.

B capital S.

The party has become more conservative? What a joke.

If this author doesn't even understand what is happening to the Republican party, how is he qualified to give advice on how to obtain its nomination for president?

Palin's best chance for success is that as the country (and the GOP)grows Obama weary it also comes back to its conservative roots.

“Dump the Republican party.”

That would be pretty extreme. Trying to build another national political party with any of the current third parties out there, is fencing yourself into a corner.

There are only two players on this field, the Republicans and the Democrats, and the Democrats have done as much as they can to make the field as uneven as possible. Of course, they had some help in this from the Republicans, in the control of state legislatures which set seriously high barriers to any access by third parties. It is much easier to “hijack” the Republican party back from the RINO’s and the squishy country clubbers, than to animate and inflate any of the third parties. The Democrat party is a lost cause, at least for a couple of generations.

We are experiencing extreme circumstances considering the OP has moved so far to the left that it has essentially merged its political ideology with the RATs. The result is one big socialist Republicrat party. Another party will restore the two party system.

I think Palin needs to run for re-election. Her election in 2006 was a three-way race and a clear and decisive win in 2010 will show it wasn't a fluke. Also the governorship will give her a pulpit to push for the kind of conservative government policies that she'll be running for on the national level - low taxes, smaller government, more efficient government.

Above all else, and I know this suggestion will sound crazy, Palin needs to examine Barack Obama's campaign and incorporate a lot of what he did into her own presidential run. The parallels are there. Obama ran against the wishes of the party leadership and against the established candidates, which is what Palin will have to do as well. Obama raised an incredible amount of money from non-traditional sources, which any GOP candidate in 2012 is going to have to do if they're going to have any chance at all. Obama ran an efficient campaign and kept his errors to a minimun, something Palin will also have to do. Political stance aside, Obama has written the book on how to win the presidency. His lessons will not be lost on Democratic hopefulls, they should not be lost on the GOP as well.

Doesn't Roger Simon practially live on MSNBC? Why is he advising Palin, and why should we think he's sincere?
