Boston Globe, union to meet (with NLRB) on 23 percent pay cut
Boston Herald ^ | June 14, 2009

The Boston Newspaper Guild will meet with managers at The Boston Globe and the National Labor Relations Board this week as it tries to block a 23 percent pay cut imposed by the newspaper’s parent company.

The cut imposed by the New York Times [NYT] Co. came after the Guild narrowly rejected a new contract with $10 million in annual wage and benefit concessions. The Times Co. says it needed $20 million in annual savings from Globe unions to keep the paper open.

After the cut was announced, the Guild filed an unfair labor complaint with the labor board, which will meet with the union Tuesday.

Isn’t that just like the union. They would rather see the paper go down rather than take a pay cut.

The union should tar & feather the editorial board and writers....

No kiddin’.

It's dead. No one is gong to buy it. They are bleeding $1 Million per week just keeping the doors open.

They ought to give the union everything they want and then lock the doors the very next day. Dissolve the company entirely.

Gonna happen anyway (unless Obama makes us taxpayers buy it).

It’s really hard to know who to root for in this one.

I’m hoping that they both lose.

Maybe the paper could be sold to the unions. Obviously the unions know how to run a paper better than the present management. Let them go broke trying to pay their own wages.

Like most Union "leaders", those negotiators are too stupid to realize that

Maybe someone can lend them some money? Oh, wait, Obama and the Supreme Court have shown exactly how secured financing is handled. Who cares if bankrupcy law says you're first in line - your loan contract means nothing.

Unions don't care about the workers at one company. Just as a company will shut down one factory to aid the company in the whole, the union will gladly drive one company into bankrupcy and the workers there out of work to serve as a warning to other companies to comply or face bankruptcy. Look at Eastern Airlines - the union gladly drove them out of business as a warning to the other airlines.

Sooner or laater, victimized union members are going to wake up and initiate “contracts” on “leaders” who pull such crap...

This is like watching two scorpions in a death match fight. Who cares who wins, just enjoy the show.

This has got to be the fastest response to a grievance by the NLRB in its history.

I wonder why.

So if the NLRB sides with the union, won’t it take down the parent company, the NYT?

Perhaps the Glob staff could do something productive, like sell pencils on the street.
