Taping tonight's episode of The Late Show, David Letterman took a few minutes to respond to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who called him "pathetic" in a radio interview after he made her and her family the butt of a recent Top 10 list. The late-night host had drawn particular fire from Palin and some pundits for a joke about one of Palin's daughters being impregnated by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during a trip to Yankee Stadium. Camp Palin apparently took the joke to be a crack against Palin's 14-year-old daughter Willow, who had recently attended a Yankees game, but Letterman insisted today that the real target was 18-year-old daughter Bristol.
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight's show. "These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No." Saying he hopes he's "cleared part of this up," Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

Well, I must say I didn’t expect that from him.
That sounds like a legitimate apology. I hope the Palin family is helped by this.
However, on the one hand it possibly was legitimate—he may not have known it was the 14 year-old Willow who was at the game, however, he is more likley simply upset with getting his facts wrong and assuming it was Bristol & that it is OK to take shots at an 18 year-old.
Frankly, as the mom of an 18-year old, I don’t appreciate the remark being directed at ANY of the Palin’s girls—regardless of the age, Letterman crossed the line IMHO.
He used to be funny, now he is really irrelevant.
He not only called Sarah a Slut, he also called all Flight Attendants sluts. When are they going to get outraged at him as well?

As one who is in David Letterman’s league when it comes to age, it never ceases to amaze me how the mouth can literally become a loose cannon. We’re going to PC oursevles to death if we don’t lighten up a little. My reaction to crude and offensive speech: let it die. No need to root around in it like pigs.

I agree with you...I was responding to the issue of “rape”.
What I think he’s trying to do is wriggle out of the fact that he made a joke about statutory rape.
So he’s pretending he “meant” it for Bristol, and that way he kills 2 birds w/ one stone.
He can still take a shot at the 18 yr. old for being a teenage mom, and he can pretend he wasn’t talking about rape.
I like that one. Todd walking on the set “Hey Letterman!, ya got something to say, say it to MY face”.
That's what I'm thinking. Settle this the old fashioned way with Letterman crying about his broken nose. Then he can do a Top Ten reasons why assholes shouldn't call other peoples wives sluts.

There is nothing legitimate about this sorry excuse for an apology. The network and sponsors have been inundated with complaint calls, that is the only thing that made this piece of human garbage attempt to offer the feeblest excuse for a statement.
