Taping tonight's episode of The Late Show, David Letterman took a few minutes to respond to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who called him "pathetic" in a radio interview after he made her and her family the butt of a recent Top 10 list. The late-night host had drawn particular fire from Palin and some pundits for a joke about one of Palin's daughters being impregnated by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during a trip to Yankee Stadium. Camp Palin apparently took the joke to be a crack against Palin's 14-year-old daughter Willow, who had recently attended a Yankees game, but Letterman insisted today that the real target was 18-year-old daughter Bristol.
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight's show. "These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No." Saying he hopes he's "cleared part of this up," Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

David is not one to apologize for such missteps.
I can't stand to watch the guy anymore. Actually, he stopped being funny about two years before he left to CBS, but I thought he was the funniest thing on late night television until then.

He’s trying to save his butt.
His first “rape joke” didn’t name the daughter, but said that “her daughter was being knocked up by A-Rod”. It was Willow attending the game. Bristol was in Alaska. This is a know fact, and certainly wasn’t missed out by the writers.
Then an evening later he made a crude joke associating Willow with prositutes sleeping with Eliot Spitzer.
Not enough, IMHO. She is an embarrassment to this country with the garbs she wears. Looks like we can’t afford to pay the president enough to dress her properly.
As far as I know, Sarah hasn’t consented to be on Letterman’s show.
Y’know, I thought of a thousand filthy, insulting jokes about Letterman and his family. I was considering posting a few, but changed my mind. He’s not worth the bandwidth.

If Bristol really was the target then he was harassing her for being a young mom.
As much as I was rooting for him at the time-I think because I thought he was Johnny’s choice-it has turned out to be a very good thing that what Dave has become did not sully The Tonight Show.
Now, not that those who did follow Johnny were or are worthy of carrying his jock, but, the vindictive mean-spiritedness of this ogre didn’t belong there.
Carson and Hope-rest their souls-its not like we didn’t know what their politics were, but, they skewered everybody fairly equally and usually in good taste. Those days are gone.

Exactly. Not only does he (not so much) backhandedly imply that Willow's rape would be "promiscuous sex" on her part, but also he says that attacking Bristol is fine. He is a freaking pedophile.

Afreed, I sent a message to CBS from a link on another thread. I insisted they fire him and mentioned what happened to Imus.
Letterman was suggesting that her daughter is a slut ,very poor taste.
He is now spinning, probably because of all the heat CBS took because of it.
It's not like they can afford even 1 less viewer.
