AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- She dared a deputy constable to shock her with a Taser.
So, he did.
Video released by a Travis County Constable's Office shows Deputy Chris Bieze confronting 72-year-old Kathryn Winkfein after stopping her for speeding on May 11 just outside Austin.
Video from a camera mounted in the deputy's car shows Winkfein cursing and challenging the deputy and even daring him to use the Taser on her.
"You're going to shove me? You're going to shove a 72-year-old woman?" she yelled.
Winkfein told KTBC-TV in Austin that she did nothing to provoke the use of the Taser.
But Precinct 3 Sgt. Maj. Gary Griffin said Bieze used the Taser only after Winkfein became combative.

I tend to think Tasers are overused.
On the other hand, though he could have contained her without it, that would have run the risk of the cuts, bruises and broken bones that is inherent in physical conflict. To her I mean.
You are wrong.
On so many levels.
It was not Sgt. Maj. Gary Griffin who tazed her.
And yes. Tazing is the safest most effective way to deal with a combative person.

I heard this played on KLBJ several times the past few days.
And a taser risks only the injury as she falls. Which can somewhat be mitigated. Wrestling an old body into cuffs risks snapping a bone, tearing thin skin, damaging a shoulder joint permanently, etc,,, wrestling them might appeal to the delicate sensibilitiies of misguided people, but a taser is far safer way to take her into custody.
Not to even mention that it was all her fault anyway.

The old bag deserved what she got.

Trust me when I tell you, he wanted to use the taser. It’s a rush, and I can’t say I wouldn’t have wanted to watch her squirm if I was in his shoes too.
can’t help thinking she could have been subdued without being zapped....

Bad idea. Very Bad.
Physical subduction will lead to grannie getting hurt. Possibly breaking some bones or even worse.
Tasing is the most effective way to deal with combative individuals.

Did you see the size of the LEO? Did you see how tiny and frail this old woman was?

She wasn't a threat to the officer. She was a threat to herself.
She kept trying to cross the white line and get back into the traffic lane. Imagine the same video, only it doesn't end with a Tazing, but it ends with her walking out in front of a speeding truck. What would you think of the Officer then?

This was a male officer, twice here size.
How in hell can a 72 year old woman not be simply handcuffed by the officer???

Physical force in subduing an idiot is far more dangerous than a taser.

Are you saying that that officer couldn’t keep her from walking into traffic? Have you seen how big that guy is?
I am sure the cop could have had her down on the groud with three legs tied in 8.3 seconds. It's Texas, after all.
But she might not walk real good after that.
Tazering is the humane way to restrain somebody in that situation. It is much less likely to injure them.
What, she thinks she's Yoda? "Away put your weapons, I mean you no harm". When I watched the clip on T.V. my gut reaction was the cop over-reacted. After reading this, I'm inclined to side with the officer.

Actually, ma'am, I'm pretty sure it really IS an electric shock.
