Federal stimulus provides work for low income kids

WALKER, LOUISIANA - The Livingston Business & Career Solutions Center is holding its first Summer Youth Work Program.

The program was made possible by federal stimulus money to help 36 youths between ages 14-24 with low income obtain employment. Along with nine other parishes, Livingston is participating in this experiment.

"The goal of this program is to help children become self-sufficient," said Case Manager Virginia Dauzat. "The students work a typical 40 hour week and are paid $7.25 per hour. The jobs they have been given are mainly with the schools and in the parish libraries where they do primarily general office or custodial jobs."

Youths that wanted to enroll in the program had to meet one or more of the following requirements:

1. Deficient in basic education skills.

2. A school dropout.

3. Homeless, runaway, or a foster child.

4. Pregnant or parenting.

5. An offender.

6. Lack employability goals and/or skills.

All applicants needed to be able to show proof of family income (W-2 forms or check stubs), Dauzat said.

"This program is already off to a good start," Dauzat said. "There were 36 job slots available for this program when we began, and 29 were filled when applications were closed. The children are supervised at their work sites and must fill out time sheets that are sent to the central office in Hammond."

"We're very confident that this program will be very successful," Dauzat said. "Children who participate in these temporary summer jobs will build work experience and references. This will give them the chance to pursue other options when the program ends. We're hoping to do this program again next year."

If all of the deadbeats get one of these jobs, wouldn’t that undercut the “national service” program they enacted a couple of months ago?

Make work BS.
Doing a job that simply does not need to be done.
Just more re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Is it just me? As a youth to qualify for a job I had to have good grades, attend school regularly and not have a criminal record. Bizzarro World!

Nope, if you do meet the criteria, no work for you.

1. Deficient in basic education skills.

2. A school dropout.

3. Homeless, runaway, or a foster child.

4. Pregnant or parenting.

5. An offender.

6. Lack employability goals and/or skills

Ah, between this and the cash for clunkers bill, I see that Bambi is handing out the pie to the mob.

How are kids who are “deficient in basic education skills” going to “work” in the office of a public library?

So, as usual, the TOTUS-reader’s handlers reward bad behavior.

How many bureaucrats are reaping fat paychecks from a program that has filled 49 “jobs”? I don’t see a per/job price listed in the article.

Wow, going on 10% unemployment, and we are spending our money on temporary jobs for kids! Brilliant. Meanwhile families are losing their homes and worrying about their next meal....

let’s see... 4 years at almost 300 bucks a week for 4 year old criminals to sit around and pretend they’re working...

Thats CERTAINLY going to provide them with training.

They won’t need no edumacation or skills- theres a goub’mint job for them. To do ‘office’ or ‘custodial’ work.

I can just see it now: “I ain’t sweepin’ up yo’ garbage- what do you think I am your house nigga’? What you gonna do about it, white boy?”

This isnt a new program. Summer jobs for kids such as these has been tried before.

I watched this program one year at the schools close to me and it was a travesty. What little work was done was done badly, it required moe supervision than necessary, the work wasnt done properly and in fatc it merely kept them off the streets during the day while paying them to learn to screw off while being paid.

"The goal of this program is to help children become self-sufficient"

SELF-SUFFICIENT? By giving them money for do nothing jobs in do nothing government agencies that are already overstaffed to municipal union featherbedding standards?

"The jobs they have been given are mainly with the schools and in the parish libraries where they do primarily general office or custodial jobs."

THE GOAL is to use taxpayer money to make a down payment for future democrat voters with "walking around money" for patronage jobs.
