The weeks ahead were supposed to mark the moment in which President Obama used a filibuster-proof, 60-vote majority to push some of the most ambitious items on his agenda through the Senate, brushing aside GOP opposition as little more than a distraction.
But instead, even with the Minnesota Supreme Court on the verge of settling that state's seemingly endless disputed Senate race, which would finally provide a 100th senator, the chamber's leaders are having to contend with the prolonged absence of two of the most senior and famed members as key summer votes approach.
Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.), 91, has been ensconced in an undisclosed hospital since May 15, initially for a minor infection, but then for a more serious staph infection. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), 77, who was diagnosed with brain cancer a year ago, did not return to the Senate last week despite proclamations from colleagues just last month that he would be back in time to lead this summer's health-care debate.

Tyranny of the majority. To be more feared than any tyrant.
What do u expect from the ComPost? Ted kennedy a pillar...all I know is that he turned a car into a submarine once.
What about that RAT from North Dakota who had a stroke last year? Tim Johnson I think was his name? Is he still in the Senate?
Both Byrd and Kennedy have been around and screwing up our country for WAY TOO LONG!
I have a personal prediction that the bad health of Byrd and Kennedy, combined with the Blue Dog Coalition, combined with the Democrats’ tendency to screw up big proposals like health care up on their way to the vote, combined with Republican opposition will prevent the Democrats from getting a filibuster proof majority for health care - and that’s even if Franken prevails.
I just hope it comes true.
If I hear one more state-run media reference to Teddy the Swimmer as “the liberal lion of the Senate”,
I’ll just sigh and say, `more of the same media garbage’.
Yes and he won re-election in 2008
Oh, wait, sorry, I thought they were talking about the pillars that were used as the backdrop for Obama's "descended from the heavens" convention speech?
Is he out of his coma or whatever state he was in?
These guys should have been gone long ago.....it’s like they are ROYALTY....
Well, he does have the IQ of hardened cement.
They haven't yet totally finished off the country. You don't mind them sticking around a couple of more years to see the job completed, do you?
Those responsible for destroying the economy and the country is plain for all to see. Take names! 2010 and 2012 vote them all out
I just have a gut feeling that Byrd will stay off the floor even if feeling better, to deprive Obama of his majority vote. I don’t think Byrd likes Obama (maybe shades of his Ku Klux Klan past, or maybe because Byrd is actually much more moderate than Obama, and sees that Obama is trashing his beloved Constitution).
I think Byrd is a lot more honorable than Obama, believe it or not, and would intentionally deprive Obama from carrying through with his radical agenda, if he can possible aid in doing it. Byrd sent a letter to Obama from his sickbed protesting, I think the Chrsyler/GM stuff and how it was being handled. I think Byrd doesn’t like Obama. Just a gut feeling, as I said.
You may be right. Byrd may truly not like Obambi!
Oh yeah! Byrd was a dixiecrat and you can take the boy out of the south but you can’t take the south out of the boy/
He does not like Obama, that is a given. And now with selling our great country down s^^ts creek without a boat or paddle, he will do all he can even from his death bed.
I so agree. VOTE THEM ALL OUT.
Knowing full well that this last stand against the Philistines will cost him his life, Samson dislodges the pillars, thereby collapsing the temple upon all who were in it. (Judges 16: 23-30).
Where's our Samson?
