At 16,000 feet. RIIIIIGHT. Must have been some model rocket enthusiast. They need to sign that boy on at NASA.

"No one wanted to see what several hundred lbs of fiberglass, plywood and 2 x 4’s looked like hurtling down on all those parked cars and onlookers.

It was hard to tell from the video, but how far was the gallery standing off? Anyone who's launched enough model rockets knows that catastrophic failure isn't completely out of the question. A failure on that scale with a large crowd could be downright tragic.

Plus, it looked liked it drifted a little ways before the 'chutes ejected. Do you know how far away the thing landed?

The fact that it might punch through the cabin and do irreparable damage to the controls hasn’t entered your head? Or possibly slam through the passenger compartment and kill a sh** load of people? I am sorry a 5 to 7 ft rocket could do a lot of damage to an airliner is it hit the right spot.

Something made of balsa wood and paper isn't going to "punch through" anything, let alone the 1.1mm aluminum skin on a jumbo jet.

Model rockets, even when traveling at tremendous speeds, don't have the mass to do any real damage to a modern day jet. While a goose could take out an engine, it would be unlikely that a model rocket could. Even if it did, it certainly couldn't do any structural damage to the aircraft.

Sorry but a rocket traveling fast enough to reach that height would certainly be able to do enough damage to a plane to bring it down. How many feet per sec does this thing have to travel to reach that height?

It was considered “not terror related” before any kind of investigation was performed.

I too, played with Estes rockets as a youth. As an adult, I have been to the Space Flight Center in Huntsville Al. several times and they have a real Saturn V on display, lying on its side. That is one big rocket. If I knew how to load pictures on here, I have some that are amazing of the Sat.V with my daughter standing there for size comparison.

pray for our nation

First I’ve heard of it.

The first one was pretty close to Humblegunner's compound.

That would be the second one (that I know of) launched from my neighborhood.

I'd have not thought these dang ol' rednecks were that tech-savvy.

Bingo.

This makes two.

I ride around a lot in this area, have seen nothing to indicate any rocketry or tech indicating launching capabilities.

That doesn't mean the capability isn't there, of course.

You (maybe not you) would be surprised at what is out in these woods.

That works like a charm.

The recovery, however, still needs work. :-(

It lands in the Lake so far.

Man, I’ve made model rockets since I was 11 yrs. old, and not being able to electronically monitor the height, if I WOULD have hit 16,000 (hell, 10,000) I’d have been class valedictorian, got a job at NASA and wrote books. Has garage technology advanced that much? Oh, yeah. The garages in IRAN, I suppose.

I'll bet there are dudes down at the local (Houston area) Mosque who are.

Surely.

But they do not get very deep into these areas.

I'll not detail the security arrangements, I have no doubt you are aware of them.

Strangers, even those who appear to belong, are either watched or stopped. Politely.

There are, however, sufficient unwatched areas for bad guys to set up all sorts of chaos.

I'm just saying they had better be quick about it.

The repetition of this event indicates at least some of base in the area.
