I had the other column written when I read the NY Times article in an airport on the way home. It demanded a vigorous response. So, here it is.

One of Twain’s own examples was that “the number of Methodists and murderers is rising at the same rate in the Nebraska Territory.”

It was also true that when Twain walked into a room the number of deserters increased by one...

At the expense of sounding like a newbie suck-up, that is one fine article.

Judge Sotomayor believes that the Constitution and the laws need not be obeyed by the Court when the interests of justice, including justice for certain groups and not others, require that result.

With the judge making an unconstrained determination as to what constitutes justice.

Great commentary.

It's also linked in the comments section here:

Gagdad Bob wrote: "It is axiomatic that something can be true on a shallow level but false on a deeper level. Therefore, if you want to prevent people from knowing about that deeper truth, you don't have to even argue. Rather, all you have to do is erect a barrier to depth. We call this barrier 'public education,' and we call the trolls who man the barriers ' the tenured.' "

We may also identify other 'barriers to depth', such as the New York Times:

"....It is also possible, however, to present a lie by constructing a discussion with nothing but hard, provable facts. The New York Times demonstrated that fact today (Sunday) with a frontpage, above the fold article comparing Sonia Sotomayor, nominee to be a Justice on the Supreme Court, with Clarence Thomas, who has been a Justice since 1991. The title of that article is, 'For Sotomayor and Thomas, Paths Fork at Race and Identity.' .....” ~ John Armor

.....Judge Sotomayor believes that the Constitution and the laws need not be obeyed by the Court when the interests of justice, including justice for certain groups and not others, require that result.......

The reverse of this judicial coin is the people. When the people believe that justice can best be served by not obeying the perverse new ruling, is it not their right and duty to disobey?

For the measure of the man, read here: High school students invite Supreme Court Justice to graduation, and then ping it out far and wide. Amazing, inspirational, just ... you'll see.
