Vietnam vet awarded
Bronze Star

NORFOLK, Va. - More than thirty years following his heroic actions, retired U. S. Navy Senior Chief Quartermaster (Submarines) Clarence G. Cooper was awarded the Bronze Star Medal Monday during a ceremony at Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek.

Cooper was recognized for his actions while serving as Craft Master of covered lighter Kodiak (YF 866) in the Republic of Vietnam on September 14, 1968.

According to the military, during combat operations Cooper's craft was ambushed by intense fire from hidden emplacements on both sides of a narrow Mekong River channel. With little regard for personal safety, he exposed himself to the automatic weapons and rocket fire while directing his crew to fire on enemy positions. In the course of these events, Cooper calmly guided his craft against the strong river currents, and radioed for emergency air and waterborne support. His actions prevented the craft from going aground, which would have meant near certain destruction or capture. During medical evacuation procedures, he skillfully maneuvered Kodiak to minimize the enemy's ability to bring down the helicopter.

Authorized in 1944, the Bronze Star Medal is one of the most prestigious medals in the military, and is awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement of service in connection with operations against an opposing armed force.

Cooper was presented his medal by Vice Adm. John Donnelly, Commander, Submarine Force.

Thank you, Mr. Cooper, for everything you have done
for your brothers-in-arms and for our country!
You are truly a hero!  God bless you!

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Good morning Kathy. (50) The “situation” ended peacefully about 12:45 yesterday afternoon. The Boss is fine, we just have a bunch of arrangements to make.

Morning coffee bump.

Last night was a little more quiet, although we did have a storm move through. Fortunately all the lightning was around us and not nearby.

Hey kids...

Was digging through an old cardboard box and found these from politics back in the good ol' days in CA. Knowing how much you all like pictures, thought you might like to see these.

Unfortunately it's long past my bedtime... so can't hang around, so pardon me for "posting and running." ~grin~

DC Metroland weather report

~ Today.....A mix of clouds and sun with a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. High 86F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%.

~ Tonight.....Partly cloudy with a slight chance of thunderstorms. Low 68F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%.

Actually, we had two days without rain but Saturday was cool and cloudy almost all day. We finally got a chance to work in the yard and cut grass. Back to more rain this week. I keep telling myself, "well, at least the weekends are dry so far."

I will be starting a summer class today and it will run til the end of July - SO - on Mondays and Wednesdays I'll be arriving and departing early. Which means I may not be around long at the Canteen so that I can keep up with the workload here.

Time for me to make my rounds. But, never fear...............I'll be bock!

Now remember, the Canteen is

(Really, we've always been open. )

Come on in and sit for a while. There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

Good morning and (((HUGS))) EG. Not much other than trying to get some of the left over work done. We are off to a sunny start, at least.

How was your weekend? Have you been getting hit with some of those severe storms?

Good morning, pro ((hugs))

Two days are just not enough for a weekend. I vote for 4-day weekend and a 3-day work week.

Actually, this class is for my personal enjoyment (fingers crossed - LOL). It’s a writers course.

Well, we haven't exactly been hit with the storms.

But, as I explained to Kathy on Sunday, we did expeirence what they call a "heatburst" which is when the wind gust up to around 50-60 MPH and the temps go up into the 80's or 90's for a few minutes.

We did lose power twice. One time for a few seconds later Saturday night and then again for a second or two early Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, there are storms in the forecast for much of this week. So, we'll what happens.

Last night's storm, all the lightning was around us. We didn't have any nearby.

We'll see what happens.

Good morning beachy. (((HUGS))) to you too.

No, we had the three H weather. Hot, humid and hazy.

Mid 90s for the entire weekend. I mowed the lawn yesterday starting about 430. It was still quite warm.
