Hunting spies is difficult, but Cuban spies are notoriously hard to detect, former senior intelligence officials said a day after an American husband and wife were indicted on charges of spying for Cuba.
Walter Kendall Myers and his wife Gwendolyn of Washington were arrested Thursday after a three-year investigation that began before Myers' retirement from the State Department in 2007. They had been spying for Havana for 30 years, according to the U.S. government.
Investigations like this typically take years to come together because they usually turn on small pieces of information, and Cuban spies often leave few traces. Cuban intelligence specializes in recruiting "true believers" rather than agents who are out to make money, these officals said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Myers appears to be one of the true believers. He praised Castro in a personal journal he wrote in 1978 as a "brilliant and charismatic leader" who is "one of the great political leaders of our time." And he called the United States government "exploiters" who regularly murdered Cuban revolutionary leaders.

Does this mean he’s giving the Cubans information more useful to the Soviets/Russians rather than Cuba?

The Cubans threw him away to protect someone higher. No good spy accepts a cold contact with out checking his Bona Fides with the Mother Land, ever. This does not pass the smell test.

True. The feds had all that “Agent no.” info. Or a defector gave him up.
Or the Russians, given they might have been the main recipient of the info since he was a Europe, not Latin American, specialist.
And his last overseas trip was not to Latin America but China.

That's probably when they hired him for the State Department--when they read that. Just the sort of guy they like to have working for them.
The Cubans don't need him now that they have the 0be-Hugo connection.

This could be huger than the way portrayed. the guy might have been, indirectly, a major Russian asset.
According to that thread posted here earlier, he told the Brits that Tony Blair was stupid not to realize that Bush was just using and abusing him with all that “special relationship” stuff. Toby Harden wrote it up in the Telegraph. That was really helpful to our relations with the UK.

Makes me wonder how many off the record comments he made to the press over the years.
ALL State Department and CIA employees should undergo monthly MANDATORY polygraphs. That would cut down on some of this BS.
I should inform you that many Cuban spies are also cross-utilized by the Russian SVR and the GRU.
And of course, James Earl "Jimmy-Hussein 1" Carter, Jr., was President then!
So, how did these two get away with treason for so long?
Even with Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 in office, the American State Department is an East Coast Elite Bastion still crammed full of liberal cronies and/or left wings surfactants that come on board no matter who is at the helm. Finding one or even two vipers in a nest of others does not always go according to Hoyle when the game is rigged to begin with--
